Goodway Hotel by DarkRay Goodway Hotel is where I stayed during my trip to Batam. It used to be known as the Mandarin Regency Hotel and that is actually pretty obvious because the hotel apparently cannot decide whether should they change their branding completely to the new name (Goodway) or stick with the old (Mandarin Regency). Throughout the hotels, one can find signboards (including a really large one by the main entrance), decorative effects, as well as stationery using either of the labels interchangeably. Of course Goodway Hotel used to be well-known because it used to house one of the better known casinos in Batam island. But that has since been clamped down in February 2005 and apparently, that had hit their business quite a bit. I thought it was interesting that when the receptionist made this known to me during my checkout, she was actually sighing about it. The location of the hotel is not bad. It is not at the center of the shopping attractions in Nagoya Town, but at a relatively accessible (and definitely walkable distance). Because of this, it is quite peaceful and quiet at night. The rooms and facilities are a little cramped and old though, but I was certainly happy the bed used for their rooms, even for twin rooms, are queen sized ones! Do note that this is a low-rise hotel with only 4 levels for those who like to stay on high floors. Being old, there are also some dubious stains on my room's WC unit and bath tub, but not enough to disturb me greatly. In overall, I think it is quite good value for money. But I think I will stay in a newer hotel should I visit Batam again. More details about the hotel can be found in my travelogue here.
It is quite a grand hotel but a little dated. Nevertheless, it is served by a good team of staff who are both friendly and helpful. One nice touch is that the curtains used were of the total blackout variety, which shields the sometimes overly bright daylight well. Panorama Regency Hotel by DarkRay This Hotel, like Goodway Hotel, used to be known by another name. In this case, it used to be known as Melia Panorama Hotel. It is an imposing looking hotel with its large sprawling grounds and higher buildup levels than other nearby buildings. Have heard many very good comments about its facilities and the service attitude of its staff during my stay in Batam. This was actually my first choice hotel during my visit, but due to the peak Good Friday long weekend period, it was already fully booked.
Taller than most others and seemed extremely well maintained. It is also very well situated in Nagoya town, being only a short walking distance away from places such as Robinson Shopping Centre. Planet Holiday Hotel by DarkRay This is a new-looking and tall hotel located in Nagoya town. It used to hold one of the largest and newest casino in Batam island. But like the other casinos in Batam, Planet Holiday's casino was forced to close in February 2005 by the authorities As the hotel was made with the casino visitors in mind, the end result was a nice, very well-maintained, and comfortable hotel. To me however, this hotel feels kind of cold, just another one of those mass-produced 4-stars hotel with no character catered to the masses. This hotel is very popular with Singaporeans.
It is quite tall. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Jl. Raja Ali Haji Sei, Jodoh BatamPhone: +62 778 43355Directions: Within Nagoya Town

Lobby of Harmoni Hotel by DarkRay Let me first state that I did not stay at this hotel, but wished that I had. Visitors to the hotel will be immediately impressed with the metal detectors by the entrance, as well as probably one of the grandest looking hotel lobby in all of Batam. This hotel is rather centrally located within Nagoya town and is popular with both businessmen and leisure travellers. However, there may be a little stigma associated with this hotel as there had been 2 fire incidents before in September 2003, with the first leading to fatalities. I love the fact that the Harmoni Hotel is literally sandwiched between KFC (to the left of it) and McDonald's (to the right of it). How's that for easy access to food. And this particular Mac actually opens 24 hours on Friday and Saturday! My friends had tried the food in the cafe within the hotel and had remarked that it was a good meal.
Very new looking, having been renovated in 2004. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Jalan Imam Bonjol Batam, IndonesiaPhone: +62 778 459308Directions: Located within Nagoya town.

Hotel Merlion was earlier called Hotel Singha. Many a times, the cab drivers will know the hotel by its older name. In order to book a room in this hotel, just pick up a phone and call at the below mentioned phone numbers. You can directly book a room over the phone. They don't even ask for credit card numbers.
The hotel tariff is same irrespective of how you book it. You book it by directly calling them, or thro interrnet, or thro some agent or directly upon arrival, the room tariff is same and they will quote it in Singapore Dollars. This is very different from other hotels which display different rates in different websites and also it wouldnt be surprising to find the guy next door may have paid 30 percent less than you. The swimming pool has a bar which is open in the evening. The ambience is good and the view is also fine. The stools are below the level of water. Just sip your bear and enjoy the swim
