The Holiday Inn provided a relaxing weekend getaway for my family in December 2011. The pool and facilities were adequate and the hotel room was very spacious.
It did however have a damp smelling carpet and we had to use fabreez to change the smell.
We went to a local supermarket via free shuttle bus and bought most of what we needed. The shopping mall was dated but had good eating options and it was reasonably priced.
Fantastic. Nothing to complain. Affordable rates for an apartment of 2 bedroom is at $86/pax,nite inclusive of ferry trip. Highly recommended. Its far from the town area though. But u can book a cab for $50/day to bring you ard the island.
Unique Quality: Clean, spacious, overlooking the pool. The pool is great!!! The hotel also has a outdoor activities such as ATV rides, ping pong tables. Its more of a resort. The whole resort is beautiful and appealing. Ard the resort has little huts where you can just chill there with your ipod and a book. Its next door neighbour, Harris Resort offers parasailing, go kart and many other activities. Since we are all girls, and judging from the island's reputation, it is actually a very safe place to stay.
We've gone twice, both times we had a room with ensuite facilities. This hotel is fairly new and has spaciuos rooms.
Unique Quality: It is a popular venue for groups to have company seminars or events.
The main cafe offers very good food and sumptuous buffets.
There are a few pool tables, a billiard table and a Rec room. They screen movies too. There's a well-stocked library. Families who bring children can leave them for a few hours with the Kid's club to engage them for a few hours with cooking or art activities.
Just on the other side of the Singapore Straits lays Batam Island. The Holiday Inn is just a stone throw away from the Ferry Terminal serviced hourly from Singapore. My stay was a "little" excursion just to see what the other side of the Straits looked like.
Unique Quality: The hotel is situated in a garden area of 2.3 hectares and offers all amenities. Since I invited a group of people we took a 2 bed room suite that offered all amenities and was large and comfortable.
The hotel had a night club, several restaurants and an elegantly situated outdoor Jacuzzi and adjacent spa.
The hotel is generally designed for Asian guests wanting to get away for a weekend or week and the service was average and with a little training could have been better.
However since this was a short stay also comparing the rate we paid it was passable.

Batam is just a 45 mins ferry ride from Singapore.
We stayed at Holiday Inn and pratically did not step out of the hotel since the hotel sent a mini van to fetch and sent us to and from the ferry terminal.
There used to be underground casino in the hotel. Now the day trip on board Leisure World Cruise is getting more popular as you just need to pay for the cruise ticket and they throw in buffet lunch for you.
Batam is an island in the Indonesian Riau archipelago. One of many. In 1989, the island became a free trade zone and went from being sleepy to very busy. People from all over Indonesia, mostly Sumatra came in looking for work. The government has developed this area and trying to market the other 7 islands nearby. Large suspension bridges were erected in the hope of attracting foriegn investment. When i was there, the bridge was used more as a tourist attraction, with many locals sitting on the side of the road having snacks and drinks.
There are some attractions: the drive down to the seven islands can be quite nice. There is a lot of greenery here and lots of fruit farms. There is an interesting old Vietnamese refugee camp. Groups of Vietnamese families were brought here to escape the end of the Vietnam war. Supposedly the last residents of this camp left in the mid 1990's. Today, you can tour the housing and hospital areas. Nothing has been fixed up and it has all things have fallen apart over time. It's an interesting attraction, but very eery. On these grounds, there is a Catholic church, which is still used.
Most people, who visit Batam either enter at Batam Center near the capital Nagoya or Watefront city, which is a resort run by holiday inn.
Batam has a very seedy side. Until recently there were illegal casinos. These were closed right before the election. We heard that they will open again, but this time be legal with money going to the state.
If you want to come to Batam I would recommend a day trip from Singapore or use it as a base to explore other islands of the Riau archipelago.
If you do not have an ASEAN passport you will have to get a visa on arrival or at the embassy before you depart.

Dear Fellow VT members,
I have booked one night stay each at Holiday Inn Batam and Harris Resort. Am i correct to say that both resorts are close to one another? I am planning to go to the nearest town for shopping and meals. Any suggestion where shall i go to and how much is the taxi fare from either resorts?? Thanks a lot!!
Cheers
Cyndi
