Nongsa Village: Serenity by the beach

This resort is actually private property with only a few houses that are rented for visitors. We chose the one closest to the sea. And it was a great choice!

Calm and quiet. Far from the masses of people.

Telunas Beach Resort: A Boat Ride from Batam and so Wonderful!

Are you looking for rest, relaxation and peace mixed in with a little adventure in your Southeast Asia travels? I recommend Telunas Beach, which is about an 1-1/2 hour boat ride from Batam. I visited Telunas beach resort about two years ago for the first time, and I have been a frequent guest since then. The rooms are set over the water, and from that great ocean view to the sand volleyball court, this place provides me with the tranquil oceanside atmosphere I love. Plus they have things like a half day waterfall hike. Telunas food is excellent, and while the menu is set, each meal is different and delicious, and I highly highly recommend the banana crepes! This is a must-go-to place in Indonesia, and a much better experience than staying only in Batam.

Rooms set over the water
sand volleyball court
Great views of the sunset and sunrise
banana crepes
opportunities for voluntourism- ways to help the communities in the islands
excellent, friendly staff
quiet
the beach is great for kids with shallow water

The Water Lodge: A little rustic, humble house on stilts

Accidentally chanced upon this little place! I was desperately needing and looking for a short getaway from work before Christmas and heard about this "Kelong" (House on Stilts in the sea) from a friend who just came back from her 2D1N trip.

It's a house built on stilts above the sea, located just off a tiny island, Pulau Tunjuk at the Riau Islands, sheltered from the north-east monsoon. Gathering my cousins and friends from the UK, we set off from Singapore Habourfront, arrived at Batam Centre and being transported to The Water Lodge. Total journey took less than 2hrs, and the chartered boat ride was very enjoyable.

Ferry tickets, land transfer and all meals have already been included in the package. And it was a bliss to sleep in the room, listening to the waves crashing gently on the stilts below, and wakening up to watch the sunrise with a good strong Indonesian black coffee. My cousins snorkelled and "floated" during high tides, my British friends read their books while I enjoyed my traditional massage.

The Water Lodge boasted of its back-to-basics laidback getaway for any city-people like us. There's no flushing toilet, no water heater and no showerhead. There are two pails in the bathroom, one for showering and the other for flushing use. The local fisherman has to row his "sampan" (small wooden boat) to the neighboring island to collect the spring water to store in the water container. The generator will be switched off late at night, so there'll be no lights until dawn breaks.

During our stay, the tide went so low that we walked from the lodge to the nearest island, and roamed about, visiting the local natives' houses and watched them pick "gonggong" & "lala" (shell-fish) from the dried sea bed, preparing for their dinner or to sell them to restaurants from Batam mainland!

Every evening, after our scrumptous seafood dinner, we would all sit at the deck, and watched the Sun set, enjoying the cool non-stop northeast winds!

We were all very well-fed and well-rested. It was absolutely fantastic just to be away from noisy mobile phones, faxes, emails and datelines!! Just 2 hours away from Singapore, and we found the lives so different!

Royal Hotel - Batam: 3-star hotel but 4-star service

Label as a 3-star hotel, our visit to the hotel was well taken care of. From the ferry terminal, we were greeted by the hotel representative and have no problem looking for the driver. We were then chauffered to the hotel and had a welcome drink while our rooms were being taken care of.

The hotel has all the facilities we need. An indoor jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, fitness centre and a swimming pool all on the same floor.

We went shopping hereby as the hotel is located in the town area itself. At night we karaoke and had a wonderful time. Just what we need to get away.

The next day, we had our breakfast and a late check out. We futher explore the island as the agent had arranged for a one-day tour.

The hotel has all the facilities under one roof.

Hotel Merlion: Hotel Merlion

Hotel Merlion was earlier called Hotel Singha. Many a times, the cab drivers will know the hotel by its older name. In order to book a room in this hotel, just pick up a phone and call at the below mentioned phone numbers. You can directly book a room over the phone. They don't even ask for credit card numbers.

The hotel tariff is same irrespective of how you book it. You book it by directly calling them, or thro interrnet, or thro some agent or directly upon arrival, the room tariff is same and they will quote it in Singapore Dollars.
This is very different from other hotels which display different rates in different websites and also it wouldnt be surprising to find the guy next door may have paid 30 percent less than you.

Formosa Hotel

The Formosa Hotel is conveniently located at Nagoya city and it is near to the Centrepoint and Lucky Plaza shopping centres, as well as the Vihara Budhi Bharkti Temple. There are also many eating places nearby. It is a very good and reasonably cheap hotel (about US$35) with clean and big rooms which I would recommend it. If you are staying here, there is a nice cafe just outside the hotel which sells delicious Singapore food and desserts, especially the laksa (noodles in curry) which is a must try (very cheap to eat here).

Harmoni Hotel: Hotel with the Grandest Lobby

Let me first state that I did not stay at this hotel, but wished that I had. Visitors to the hotel will be immediately impressed with the metal detectors by the entrance, as well as probably one of the grandest looking hotel lobby in all of Batam.

This hotel is rather centrally located within Nagoya town and is popular with both businessmen and leisure travellers. However, there may be a little stigma associated with this hotel as there had been 2 fire incidents before in September 2003, with the first leading to fatalities.

I love the fact that the Harmoni Hotel is literally sandwiched between KFC (to the left of it) and McDonald's (to the right of it). How's that for easy access to food. And this particular Mac actually opens 24 hours on Friday and Saturday!

My friends had tried the food in the cafe within the hotel and had remarked that it was a good meal.

Very new looking, having been renovated in 2004.
