by writtery

Hello.. i m going to Jakarta in february. i need to find a cheap but safe hotel and is it safe to travel by taxi? any tips?
thank you

Re: hotel in jakarta

by angiebabe

Hi, just to let you know that you will probably find lots of hotel and transport and other tips in VTers pages written precisely to help other travellers with this sort of question if you go the Jakarta and perhaps INdonesia travel guides and then click on VTers travel pages there - there is a ranking system and you can find pages in order of rankings, which includes the Top 5, or in a list of newest rated - you get the chance to acknowledge the tips and pages for their helpfulness etc

then anything still not covered or needing further help then the forums are very good

Travel Tips for Jakarta

In Jarkata/Bandung

by shoestringbudget

I guess people that I met in my short trip to Jakarta cum Bandung were really nice and helpful.

For e.g. When u bargain at shops (not in the malls obviously and not easy if u're not a local) and decided not to buy for whatever reasons they wouldn't "give u a face"...
and they are helpful when u ask for directions...

However, spoke to a couple locals there and were many a times cautioned to not walk the streets, be careful, etc. etc.

I don't really think Jakarta is a tourist-friendly place; unlike Bali (which ve got friends raving abt it)... but if u happen to be in Jakarta I guess u shld just err on the side of caution and think twice before going off-the-beaten-tracks.
I know I wldn't.

hanging out and people-watching

by latte18

Hanging out in malls is part of the affluent Jakarta teens' lifestyle. They have an acronym for every popular malls, such as PS for Plaza Senayan, PIM for Pondok Indah Mall, and so on. These teens usually just sit around in the food court and people watch, which is something I also loved to do in my teenage years and I have to admit it was quite fun.

Busy, young professionals have also taken up this lifestyle, although they tend to hang out in trendy cafes while sipping their lattes to unwind with their friends after a long day's work.

REMOVE YOUR SHOES!

by lmkluque

Take your shoes off before entering--yes, a Mosque, but also--a house.

Don't be alarmed if you see a lizard running from beneath a picture on the wall to another picture, they won't bother you.

(While relaxing in the house one evening, I saw a lizard come from under this picture. Later, I saw a lizard come from under another picture. I'm not sure if there were two or just one very fast creature. They just try to keep cool--I don't blame them.)

Mini Indonesia

by xiquinho

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a 100-hectare park in southeast Jakarta, conceived by Mme Tien Soeharto in 1971 and opened in 1975. It presents the cultures of Indonesia's 27 provinces with full-scale houses, regional handicrafts and clothing, best viewed by small boat or cable car. It's Indonesia's most visited attraction and a surreal but informative way to appreciate the amazing diversity of the Indonesian archipelago.

Southeast Jakarta, 18km from Jakarta centre (take a taxi to the park). Open daily.
