Most of the place in Jakarta is safe for tourists as well as Jakarta citizens,
unless you walk around in prostitution area or dark alley.
However, still be cautious of pickpocket when visiting some market or using public transports (bus and train).
Backpacker area in Jakarta in Jalan Jaksa and its neighborhood in Menteng area. But with US$35/day budget you can stay in good hotel in every area in Jakarta.

yep, it's like a small restaurant (mostly outdoor with tents) with various kinds of food from toast to fried rice. if you feel like eating at night, but you don't want to spend a lot of money, then you should go and find one.
The Blue Bird taxi drivers never give tourists the correct exchange or they simply do not have enough money change. So, please pay them the correct taxi fares. If you pay them in many ruppiah notes, do not expect the correct change back.
The residents of Jakarta prefer to travel in cheaper transportation. So, the taxis of Jakarta all aim at tourists' pocket money.
Eventually, you may have to travel in bajajs and tuk-tuks of Jakarta for budget considerations.
Well don’t get scared or shocked after having a look at the pictures above because that’s not pics from Iraq , Somalia , Palestine or even Aceh .But from my most favorite Military enthusiast Club CODE 4 where I am a member myself – A Club that is different from any Sports Club , A Club where one can almost feel the hardship, experience of a true fighting Soldier in a fun simulated War situation .
Equipped with heavy Military gears this Club consists of Members with profession like Computer Programmers , Business men , Executives , Editors , Graphic Designers and Expatriates like me who love to play a small role in life– A Soldier for the Day .We share the same hobbies as war game Freaks , Shooting Games , Air soft replica toyguns, and many more which makes us together as a Team , An Only Club in Jakarta which gives total war experience for anybody during our game plays. This Sport is entirely Different from any paint ball or shooting games because the game plays are totally focused on War scenarios not only on Assault or Elimination themes.This particular time the Scenarios are played by Dividing 2 groups through the members of Code 4 , in which each plays a role of its own own . Each Group is assigned with a Special Task respectively , defense or offense , and the goals , Scenarios are explained before days of the games play . Each member even receives a Email Alert explaining the game plays , information on the Dress code , groups separation , and many other Basic Information .
And then Comes the Day of the Game . The Day of the War !!!
Built at 1889 - 1901, this pretty beautiful Catholican church Saint Marie becomes one of the landmarks of Jakarta. The interior also gorgeous. Made by teakwood ceiling and wooden rooms for confensions [Nick was there :) and I was taking pictures meanwhile waiting!].
it a small supermarket famous among jakarta's expatriats. most of their goods are imported so the expatriates won't miss their home so much.
the supermarket is famous by its sausages. food, drink, and all kind of things varies
