Tired of shopping? Go upstairs!

The hotel is right at the Mangga Dua Square which is a 4-storey mall full of small stores and shops, none of which carry international name or luxury brands. The hotel begins at the 5th floor, where the main dining hall, swimming pool, gym and spa are located. I booked a standard double-room online but when I checked in they upgraded at no charge to an executive room, which was roomier. The buffet breakfast is not included in the room charge, so while a bit high it had a wide and tasty variety.

The hotel is certainly recommendable for holiday travellers (near the airport and North Jakarta attractions) but probably not for those in town for business as the hotel is far from the central business district. Location surely counts a lot in a place notorious for its traffic.

Help needed - Jakarta Hotel reviews

by Edy8

We will be staying three nights in Jakarta and being mindful of traffic jams and errant taxi-drivers, we are looking at good and reasonably-priced hotels to stay. Based on TripAdvisor's reviews, we narrowed down to Novotel Mangga Dua Hotel, Hotel Ibis Mangga Dua Jakarta,Hotel Ibis Kemayoran Jakarta,Ibis Jakarta Arcadia Hotel, Formule 1 Menteng, Ibis Slipi. There appears to be downsides on each of these hotels. What do you think is the best in terms of comfort, food(Chinese food) and closeness to landmarks?

Another thing, we are recommended to take blue taxis - is it good to go with meter or bargained price?

Thank you in advance.

Hello

if you like shopping in Mangga Dua, then Novotel is okay . Blue bird taxi is using meter then no need for bargaining the price but of course you have to make sure with the driver that shud use meter.

Hi,
Jakarta is BIG ! Most landmarks are in the Centre or North. Choose a hotel in one of these areas, otherwise you will spend lots of time in traffic jams.
Mangga dua area is fine, and Hotel Batavia is located in the historical old city: museums, cafés, harbour, etc . . . . For shopping, I don’t know.
Almost all taxis (from companies) are metered and reliable, but you can avoid traffic jams using the Busway transportation system.

I would say novotel mangga dua - its basically located in jakarta's old town, you will have no trouble at all finding chinese restaurants. landmarks (the old bank museum, fatahillah, national museum, national monument) are not that far away. closest one being the old bank museum about 15 mins drive.

oh and may i correct that you should take "BLUE BIRD GROUP" taxis, they are the most reputable and always uses a meter. many other companies copy similar body color and logo so watch out.
one trick that always works for me if i flag down the wrong company on the street is i tell the driver that im paying by voucher (which is only issued by blue bird taxis). but not to worry if youre getting one from the hotel as long as you tell them you want blue bird only :)

Thank you Hermann and Monita for your useful tips. I have already booked Novotel Mangga Dua (without breakfast). Just wondering whether or not there are nearby places where I could take breakfast, if not, does the hotel provide good breakfast.

Actually I intended to rent a taxi for our daily tours. But after reading up some of the tips, I am thinking of booking day tours. Can you or anyone else who knows, give me some advice. Thank you.
