what shouldn't I miss

by southwinds

Would appreciate ideas on what I shouldn't miss in a short visit to Jakarta this weekend and early next week.

I appreciate the ideas on the webpage but would like to know what a local would recommend and possibly meet.

Thanks for your ideas

Hi!

I'm not from Jakarta but visit the city often - heading there again this weekend. For 1st time visitor like you, its depends on what you like to do/see. I recomend the old city Kota in North Jakarta (take the Busway to Kota halt then walk from there). There are a couple of museums/art galery in Kota area. Check out also Jakarta's landmark Monas in central Jakarta. The Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in the out skirt of the city also worth to check out for insight into the archipelagoes' various ethnic group & culture.

some pointers on how to get along with Indonesians

by latte18

Indonesians are generally friendly people. They're kind and unassuming to most foreigners, especially Westerners (affectionately dubbed "bule" by most Indonesians). But there are some NO NOs that cannot be done in front of an Indonesian., so if you want to get along well with Indonesians during your visit here, here are some pointers:

- Always use your right hand when shaking other people's hand or offering something. Also it's generally required to shake hands (with your right hand) if you're being introduced to someone.

- Eating with your bare hands is a norm here. But again only use your right hand to take your food. Do not begin eating when the host hasn't started yet.

- Indonesians are very easy going. People expect you to be patient and polite. Lose your cool and you'll not get on too good with locals

- Touching someone's head, especially someone older, is a big NO NO.

- Despite being the country with the largest muslim population, the Islam practiced here is very moderate thus drinking at bars and clubs is one of locals' favorite pastimes in Jakarta. But, exercise your common sense in this situation and don't exhibit rude behaviors in front of Indonesians. After all, we're still Easterners :)

The Horses to Kurusetra at night

Finding this when the night fall is beautiful. Artician I Nyoman Nuarta already re-make this Horses of Kurusetra with "special effect" running .... And, find The National Monument [Monas] as the background of this statue.

the first of its kind

by latte18 about Pondok Indah Mall

Opened circa 1992, this is the mall that started the mall revolution in Jakarta. Located in the posh residential neighborhood of Pondok Indah (the Beverly Hills of Jakarta), the mall is not quite trendy nor popular anymore with Jakarta elites. Nevertheless, it is still packed with families especially during weekends and public holidays.

The malls features the first branch of Singapore-based department store, Metro and offers numerous shops, eateries, a cinema, and a food cort. Adjacent to the mall is a popular water park with climbing wall facilities.
