Hi! I stayed @ Mangga Dua area during my first visit last year. Wonder is there any other good area which is close to shopping places, Tanah Abang and great nasi padang restaurant. Any help & suggestions is much appreciated :-)
You could stay at Hotels on Jakarta main thoroughfare Jalan Thamrin, for address and room rate please check http://www.holidaycity.com/hcrs/RateInv/ there are : Hotel Sari Pan Pacific 4*, Hotel Nikko 4*, Hotel Ibis Thamrin 3*, Grand Hyatt 5* Plaza Indonesia Compound, or at Hotel Millenium Sirih 4*. Hotel Arcadia 3*.
Those hotels are very close to Tanah Abang Shopping Area, it was close to Sarinah Dept. Store, close to Plaza Indonesia Shopping mall where you could enjoy a nice Padang Restaurant inside, close to Grand Indonesia Shopping Plaza where you could find a Restaurant Padang at the same lane Jalan Teluk Betung

As mentioned above, I agree that Jalan MH Thamrin is the best area to stay in Jakarta. I normaly stay around this area whenever I am in Jakarta. Depends on your budget, you may opt to stay in hotel along Jalan MH Thamrin itself such as Sari Pacific or nearby area like Jalan Wahid Hashim (Ibis) & Jalan Jaksa - Jakarta's backpakers place.
Travelling to Tanah Abang is also easy - just 10mins taxi (or bajaj) ride from this area. You can also go to other part of the city taking the busway from the halt opposite Sarinah.

In front of the Kristal hotel and al over Jakarta you can find fruit stalls...
In januari these rambutans where all over the place. A friend where we where staying even had these in his garden. A large tree and the branches where getting heavy from this fruit.
They are sold in strings....a few twigs tied together. Rombutan : we can sometimes get them in Belgium , but they never taste as good as here. Juicy white flesh wrapped arround a pit. Family from the litchee.
yeah so narcotics are a bad idea wherever you go, ditto drugs, but I must say I found it a bit amusing to go to a club called "Stadium" where half of the patrons were swaying their noggins back and forth. must be the "e...," a big seller on the night scene.
Rumah Yoga, means yoga house, is a nice place to get sweaty while calming your mind - by practising yoga. It offers walk-in session and packages. Many foreigners practice here, as well as some guru.
Additionally, it also offers spa treatments.

This location is where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Kingdom of Pajajaran in the early 16th century. Dutch domination of Jakarta old fort and warehouses of the Dutch East India Company, can still be seen here. My fiance took me here to see the magnificent Makassar schooners (ships) that are still used today! We went through the entrance gate and slowly drove and watched people (workers) loading and unloading supplies. Very memorable sight. UPDATE:
I asked my fiance to take me here again when I returned in December 2003. Why? I wanted to take photos using my digital camera. The schooners are still used today for shipping items. On a busy day, you can see many workers loading and loading items for shiping or receiving. Not a modern facilty, I just like to see little bit of Indonesian history.
This market have 2 buildings, infront is selling all kind medicine, docter and hospital utilities. the behind building is selling all kind birds. this is for bird lover place.... any kind birds, from great sound bird till bad soun you can find it here...:)
