Second-hand travel books in Jakarta?
by koiruli
Hi, we are soon in Jakarta and need to look for some travel guide books for our next destinations (Tasmania, New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga.) Are there any shops in Jakarta where we could find secondhand travel books, like Lonely Planet or Rough Guides? Or guesthouses that would have a good book exchange with used travel books?

You can find all sorts of old/second hand books near the Senen railway station just on the back side of Plaza Atrium, there are so many book stalls there.

Thank you, we'll definitely go there and have a look.

No, the stalls near Senen station did not have any travel guide books, not new or second-hand. They are selling mostly study books, and all in all the selection does not have anything to offer to travellers (unless you're looking for school books, an old atlas or islamic books).

There are plenty of bookstore in Jakarta
Almost every malls have bookstore (Gramedia or Gunung Agung)
Those are new books instead of 2nd hand books
But, at least you can get the books in cozy place
Have a nice trip,

Travel Tips for Jakarta
City highlights
by Weny
The city at night is amazing. There a video screens on the sides of buildings and many buildings have a very futuristic look, especially when lit up. At the same time there are many carved archways and buldings with traditional red roof tlies. It is city of hustle and bustle but you can relax too. My foundest memory, believe it or not, was going to a mall in Jakarta! It had very different stores then our malls do and they sold alot of local items. It was very interesting.
The old town
by xaver
The old town, near and around the Jakarta museum, the area nearly destroyed by the riots against chinese people during 1998, walking around there with the TV images impressed in my mind was somehow a nice experience...things change, things can be better.
Packing List

Bring a large suit case, everything is very cheap in Indonesia / Jakarta. Who knows you would like to shop til you drop !! Jakarta / Indonesia is very hot and humid. I would suggest, casual and smart casual. Bring sandals, sun glasses and a hat. Lip Balm, Sun Block, Moisturiser, and usual medicines Camera

Shopping at Mangga Dua
The Mangga Dua area is where most of the regular Indonesion families go shopping. Moderately priced clothes which you can even buy in bulk. Some of the out of town merchants purchase their products from Mangga Dua which they bring back to their village shop to sell.
If copy handbags or fake designer items is what you look for, Mangga Dua is the place for it. Very reasonable prices but check for quality and bargain hard.
Also if you are looking for wedding accessories for example, dresses for children bridesmaids, invitation cards, wedding souvenirs of all sorts, you can find several shops that caters for this event.
There is also an IT Mall for those looking for computer related items.
Warning, do not attempt to go to Mangga Dua close to the local celebration period EG Chinese New Year or Eid. The traffic is so bad and the Malls so jammed packed with people that taints the shopping experiece. Try to go there early in the morning. The shops open at about 9:30 - 10:00. Ideally go there during the weekdays.
A very, very, very big grocery store
by rosie_b about Carrefour
For anybody who is looking for anything from refrigerators to fish and vegetables, you should check out Carrefour in Lebak Bulus. It's a great place for your one-stop-shop for household appliances and foods too. The most amazing section that I found was the fish and vegetable sections. There were some fishes that I have never seen in my life that they have there, in large quantity. There were also an abundance of fresh vegetables that made me want to buy all of them. This store is sort of remind me of Costco in the States. For people who just want to stay for a lilttle bit in Jakarta, they might get some Indonesian ramen here, since they have an endless selections and huge amount of it. Maybe about $1-3 for ramen and if you're interested in buying refrigerators or tv, it could go up to $200 or more.
