We did a three day, two nights hiking tour through the reserve, with Sunda Jaya as basis.
We had brought some food and a backpack, but did not really know what to expect.
Mr Komaruddin - owner of Sunda Jaya homestay - provided everything we lacked, plus two porters.
Cheapest way to do Ujung Kulon, back to nature!
Room for 2 with fan, use of common bathroom with owner, price Rp 50.000 (november 2005).
Meals Rp 10.000,-, breakfast and snacks are free!
Owner, mr Komaruddin, is very helpful and will make all arrangements for your hike in the reserve and/or boat trip to the islands:
- boat charter
- food an cooking utensils.
Boat Charter to any of the islands: Badul, Handeuleum, Peucang, Panaitan will cost Rp 500.000 to Rp 2.000.000 depending on the distance.
Porters cost Rp 50.000 a day, I suggest you give them some extra, it is a heavy job!
From Tamanjaya you may also hike to Cikacang waterfall and Cibina hot springs within a day.
You may want to bring your own food, and a sleeping mat if you stay overnight in the reserve.
Visitors are only allowed up to the buffer zone where rustic accomodation is available on Peucang island.
There are individual rooms for rent and also guesthouses that can accomodate up to 50 people.
Becareful of the forest monkeys. You have to close the door / window all the time. I even heard from a friend that once she found a python curling on the window sill coz she left it opened.
While i witnessed little naughty monkeys (long-tailed macaques) trying to sneak inside the guesthouse and grab anythign that looks like food. One of my friends lost her camera and shades coz she left them on the beach while swimming. Even the barking deers are also eager to eat our food. But they're still cute ^__^ Lizards can also be found easily around the island.
Don't play by ear! You must reserve the guest house first before arriving to Pulau Peucang if you don't want to spent the night in a tent. The one & only restaurant in Peucang served meals for reserved guest only. Anyway, the food is not too bad.
Great views of beautiful deers... Amazing!
