Santika Hotel Surabaya: Great Staff, not so great room

We stayed for 2 nights in Santika Hotel Surabaya, i admit it was because of the reasonable price and also the location. My husband and I was only going to the US Consulate General, so we want a moderately priced hotel near the consulate.
We booked the room via telephone, initially they gave me normal rate for the deluxe room *no superior rooms* and when i asked if there is any special weekend rate, for the date i requested, only then they told me that they do have it.
Point number one, always ask for special rate during weekends, otherwise, they wouldn't tell you.

The room was what we expected it to be; not so great. It was considered clean. Ceiling was quite low (i'm a 5'2 asian girl, and it was low enough for me, imagine for the foreigners). And the bedsheet had some sort of liquid marks on it. Of course they have an LCD tv, which is good.

So i thought it was just fine, until i enter the bathroom. It was shabby. The colour coordination for the tiles wasn't pretty, the toilet seat was old, and the bathtub was quite high * i bumped my knee twice trying to hop into the bathtub to take a shower. Towel was just an inch away from being a mop.

I would be pretty devastated if i had to pay the normal rate for that room, thank god we had the special rate. Mind you, for the normal rate, there are other nicer hotels with the same price.

We were also given a connecting room on the non-smoking floor, which was the only available room on the floor. It was quite noisy because the room next door was making a fuss at night. And since the hotel is near a mosque, you can expect to hear morning prayers early in the morning.

Apart from all the things i experienced above, the hotel staff was friendly and extremely helpful, and the food in the hotel was also quite delicious. If only they can upgrade some essentials like towels and the bathrooms, i think this hotel isn't so bad afterall.

Unique Quality: Great food, friendly and helpful staff, quite near to Tunjungan Plaza, the famous mall in Surabaya.
Near US Consulate General

Hotel Majapahit Mandarin Oriental: Raffles in Java

The original hotel was built in 1910 by the son of Singapore Raffles Hotel founder, Lucas Martin Sarkies.

With additions to the facade in 1936, this hotel is clearly one of the most beautiful and stylish in the world (no kidding). Little has changed from its original form and 30s additions.

Charlie Chaplin attended the opening ceremonies of the Art Deco front addition.

At the end WWII and the capitulation of the Japanese, the hotel found itself at the centre of efforts by Indonesian nationalists to protest at the return of the Netherlands East Indies to Dutch control. The famous 'Flag Incident' occured here.

In 1993 a $35 million restoration was carried out and the magnificent hotel returned to its former glory.

One of my well travelled frends who has stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world, claims this to be in the top 5 for sheer elegance. It is a 5 star rated hotel.

This is the place where the president of Indonesia comes to stay when she is in town.

Unique Quality: Beautiful, remarkably spacious rooms with period design and fittings. Facilities include a huge garden at the rear with mature trees, an elegant lobby, a beautiful ballroom, two good restaurants, a delicatessen and cake shop and a beautiful swimming pool and well equiped fitness centre.

The architectural style is superb.
