White Water Rafting Views
My girlfriend & I are going to Bali for the 1st time this November. It will be a relatively short visit of 8 nights.
Apart from a bit of sightseeing (Ubud is drawing me!), we just want small, low-key & simple accommodation in the least commercialised area, on or walking distance to a beach.
Is this possible? The coast seems to be full of resorts only. Is there anywhere more intimate?
I have heard the west coast is less busy. Does anyone know of a little gem somewhere?
Thanks for any help.
Candidasa is low key, but most of the beaches were eroded in the 80's during a construction boom. However, the resorts there are very small and inexpensive and probably allow you to use what little beach they have for a nominal day fee, if they would charge you at all.
(and Ubud is a dream!)
The north coast is indeed less commercialized. You could try Lovina, which is about 10 km west of Singaraja. I have been there often since 1969 when there was no accommodation at all. Although now there is a lot of it, generally they are low-key.
Or else you could go farther west, to Pemuteran; I have not been there recently, seems only since a few years there has been built any accommodation at all.
Thanks for all your help. Mmm, food for thought! I'll check out your suggestions & hope that everything will slot into place! J
Also consider the northwest coast around Pemuteran. Very low key and laid back area with great snorkeling/diving ad lots of nature including the Bali Barat National Park. Beautiful drive there from Ubud. You haven't mentioned budget but Adi Assri Beach Cottages gets good reviews and is fairly simple in style. $50 to $70 inclusive.
We stayed in Kuta and although the place is commercialized, our room is tucked behind a garden.
Ubud will really draw you especially if you read my article and see my pictures
there are nightly cultural dances, wood work artisans in Gianyar (on the way to Ubud from Kuta), open air cafes and cooking schools.
