More about Chedi Club At Tanah Gajah
Chedi Ubud is Outstanding
My wife and I spent 6 nights here. The experience was outstanding. The personalised butler service is brilliant (Winda was great), the location serene and beautiful, food great and facilities top rate. Great experience but don't bring the kids unless they are quiet.
We stayed at Chedi Club Ubud for our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for anything more during our stay. Our Butler Intan was friendly and helpful and made every effort to make our stay memorable. There was so many small touches, such as flower filled baths, flower arrangements, cakes, champagne e.t.c. It was a luxury having our washing done every day and every time we returned to our room it was spotless. The complimentary limo service was great and the driver took us to a fantastic art gallery where we could buy beautiful paintings. The food was out of this world, especially the bebek betutu (duck). I definitely recommend the Chedi for a luxurious, peaceful and romantic holiday.
We stayed at the Chedi Club in Tanah Gajah in early November 2006, having previously spent 4 days in Hong Kong. In truth the two experiences are about as far apart as they could possibly be! It's hard to fault the Chedi Club - the rooms are excellent (we had a pool villa) but the whole place was immaculate, and beautiful, whilst retaining character and not being overly clinical.
The butler service feels a little odd at first, but it's not intrusive, and Intan, our butler, did everything she could to help. Laundry service was a treat, especially if you are doing multiple locations (we were heading to Lombok after this), and everything was done with no fuss and absolute excellence. Cocktail hour was excellent (try the Tanah Gajah Purple) with birds flitting in and out of the open sided restaurant pavillion and ducks wading through the rice paddies.
Food was good, and the car service did everything you could want - don't be afraid to ask,and it was always there when we needed it. So, as for the hotel, the staff, the food, the drinks, the rooms, the pools - all absolutely and unashamedly top class. We had a massage overlooking the rice paddies, and this was good, though (I'm advised by my more massage experienced other half) not great.
Why not 5 stars? Probably a simple perception thing, and certainly not down to the hotel. Whilst unmistakeably special, the quiet was almost disconcerting at times, and the atmosphere meant you often found yourself whispering as though in a library! This is not a criticism of the hotel, or the other guests, but simply a note to people considering the Chedi Club - it truly is a retreat!
The final point may be about the length of your stay - a week here may get boring for some. Our 4 days was perfect, and relaxing, after Hong Kong and the flight to Bali, though I must admit, that maybe I would miss the pleasure of a beach and the sea if this was somewhere I was thinking of for a longer break....
TOP TIP - eat at Mosaic in Ubud. Michelin quality food - unexpected and fantastic - and they let each of you try a different tasting menu if you choose, which is a pleasure and change from the norm.
Luxury combined with Serenity
We went to Bali for our honeymoon and decided to split our stay between Seminyak and Ubud. While in Ubud, we stayed at the Chedi Club and it was fantastic! We were picked up from our hotel in Seminyak by a car that the Chedi sent and upon arrival, greeted by our own personal butler (yes, butler) – Sutari. As soon as we walked up the entrance stairs to the hotel, the space opens up to luscious grounds surrounded by rice fields, exotic birds, beautiful statues and architecture. The serenity of the hotel is indescribable – each villa is very secluded, decorated beautifully with full attention to detail. Since we were in Ubud for 6 nights, we decided to split our stay with 3 nights in a normal villa followed by 3 nights in a pool-villa. The normal villa is beautiful, with an outdoor bath & shower. The mini-bar and snacks are all included in the price of the room, and Sutari informed us that all laundry services were also included. At night, all you hear are the toads in the ponds that surround the villas and you feel a part of Bali that can only be experienced in Ubud. Breakfast every morning was fabulous – served either in your room or in the open air restaurant overlooking the rice fields – from fresh juices to pancakes, they have enough selection for everyone.
Our pool villa was heaven – the room seemed more elegant than the normal villas, and includes an outdoor tub (shower was indoor). We ate breakfast every morning by our pool which Sutari brought and arranged for us. Since we didn’t use the pool too much (only complaint was the water was too cold), we probably wouldn’t opt for a pool villa just for the pool – it’s not very large and more of a plunge pool than anything else. Unless you want to plunge in privacy, we would suggest to use the hotel’s pool which is stunning – and while we were there, totally empty. The Chedi offers free yoga every morning (we did 1 class and it was amazing), with a true yoga professional – they supply yoga mats, towels and is done in a beautiful open air room overlooking the rice paddies. In addition, the free car service to/from Ubud Centre which the hotel supplies is priceless. All we had to do was tell Sutari what time we wanted to go into town and she would arrange for the car. When we were ready to return to the hotel at night, we would call them from the restaurant/store we were at and they would provide door to door service. Since Ubud centre is about a 10 min drive from the hotel, this was extremely helpful.
The pictures on the hotels website and Trip Advisors website are infact everything you see when you are there – they just don’t do the place justice. Similarly, the personal touch that is delivered by the hotel staff and Sutari (she was absolutely amazing) was something that we’ve never experienced anywhere else and made our stay that much more memorable. And just when you think you’ve left the feeling of being catered to in Bali, upon arriving back to Canada, we received thank you cards from Sutari and the Chedi hotel manager. Needless to say, we would highly recommend the Chedi for anyone who is looking for seclusion and a paradise in the hills of Ubud.
Peace and Tranquility
I great hotel in a fantastic location with lots of open spaces surrounded by padi fields.
We booked this hotel through Asia Rooms and stayed in one of the standard villa's. The villa was amazing with open air bathroom and shower and a large bedroom. We weren't bothered about getting a pool villa as were out sight seeing a lot of the time and because many villas have private pools this means there is never anyone using the main pool.
We were more than shocked when we were told Gin, Vodka and Wiskey in the rooms are all free of charge. Also beer was free including the restaurant as well as cocktail hour by the pool. Unfortunately we were only there for a few nights and so didn't make full use of the free drinks.
The restaurant is in a lovely setting with great views over the padi fields. We only had breakfast at the hotel but it was huge and the staff were excellent.
Another great aspect was the free shuttle runs into Ubud and also the pick ups whenever you needed them. We didn't know about this in advance and thought we would be getting taxi's all the time but this made it a hug bonus. They also gave us a free lift to the airport which was great of them.
Overall amazing staff, great location and lovely villa's, so a must for all visiting Ubud.
Stunning and tranquil
What a stunning sight when you enter the hotel. We loved the elephant statues and theme throughout the hotel and villas. Our pool villa was spacious and pool about 15m long.
Overall I would say this is a fantastic hotel for couples and honeymooners. You can really stay away from everyone if you want to. Not really for a family like us with a 7 year old as they don't really cater for children. We knew this before so were adequately prepared but just wanted to experience the beautiful setting.
We stayed for 4 nights and even though it was raining during a couple of the days - most unusual for Aug - we were happy relaxing in the covered area by our pool villa.
Free laundry service is welcome particularly when you are stopping at multiple stops as we were. Our butler was very enthusiastic but perhaps not that experienced as he promised various things but did not always deliver eg we were told if there was anything we needed in the minibar other than the drinks already there, he would replenish as necessary. I wanted Corona beer but was told this would have to be paid for and not complimentary.
The morning yoga classes from 8am to 9.30am were fantastic . The setting was truly tranquil as the open room overlooked the rice paddies. The massage adjacent to the gym and yoga room again overlooks the rice paddies and is peaceful.
My travel agent, Mary from Indigo, said "Why not try the Chedi - it's insane!" After I took a deep breath (Chedi doesn't come cheaply) I decided to book in for three nights. My wife, 3-yr old and myself stayed in a regular villa, one of the three that connect to each other.
The Chedi is sublime - everything about it is special. The pick-up from our beach villa, the arrival and greeting from our butler (wasn't sure before-hand if they were exclusive to the pool villas but we found out that everyone gets one) - the arrival is beautifully done. The villa was simple yet lovely and very nicely furnished and decorated. The bathroom was one of those delightful half-in/half-outside ones and my wife could probably have spent the three days happily locked in there. ..deep bath, nice salts/bubbles, big rain shower and lots of fluffy towels.
Whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted was provided by our butler, Murjana, who was a lovely artistic guy who took special care of our son. I had initially thought that Chedi would not be very child-friendly, but at the time we were there there were 1 or 2 others around. The Chedi handles them very well - providing special menus etc while reminding parents of other guests' desire for peace and quiet. We even got a babysitter one evening just so we could enjoy a bit of child-free time over a couple of cocktails - and what great cocktails they are. We received great, attentive service and it made for a nice 2-hr interlude.
The meals are very good. Breakfast would have to rank as one of the best ones I've ever had. Decent choice, superb quality. Just the juices and smoothies would have been enough (but we were on holiday). We had one lunch, one dinner in restaurant and one in villa and they were all delicious.
The main pool is good, and quiet because of the many pool villas, and the gym is also good and hardly ever used (I think I was the only person that week).
Above all it's two things: the location, floating in the rice fields, that transports you to rest and relaxation within a matter of minutes; and the staff, from the manager down, who all know exactly what to do to make your stay perfect.
We loved this place and will return for sure - just need to work out how to stay a little longer, perhaps 4-5 days would be optimum as there's so much to see and do around Ubud as well as relax in the Chedi. When we return we will ask for one of the villas standing apart - purely so that our son can make a bit of noise without worry of disturbing others.
If you're reading these reviews then I guess you're serious about staying in an up-market retreat in Ubud. Read no further - this is the one.
A wonderful start to our Honeymoon
My wife and I recently stayed here, largely based on the reviews from tripadvisor. We absolutely loved the service and our stay here. Even though the property is a little outside of central Ubud, they do have a shuttle that can take you into the town for shopping, sight seeing or dinner. The butler service is great as you really don't have to think about anything during your vacation.
We also enjoyed the yoga sessions and the breakfast service. We stayed here for 7 days and I would suggest that if you're spending a week in Bali you consider spending 4-5 days here and then the other 2-3 days in Jimbaran Bay as Ubud is a fairly quiet town with limited options for dinner.
the only thing i didnt like about the chedi is that you have to leave..
