Hiring a car with driver

by fachd

My wife and I will be travelling to Bali this year. We are considering hiring a car/driver to see such sights as Ubud etc. We would appreciate some feed back from members who have used this mode of transport. Are they any tips or pitfalls to be aware off. Our enquiries lead us to believe the cost per day is about $50AUD. Can you also hire car/driver at night.

We always get a car with driver for $US40 per day. Main thing is to work out roughly what days you will/will not need his services. Presume you will be having some rest/shopping days at your resort area. Make sure you see the vehicle that you will be travelling in and that rental includes petrol cost. As long as you're paying him, he'll turn up whenever you want - day or night. He should speak good English and get his business card for contact number. The main advantage of a driver vs. self-drive is that if there's an accident, its not your fault!

Hi, I can highy recommend Agus Kuswana as the best possible driver we could have wished during our trip to Bali last May. In five daytrips he showed us Ubud, but also a lot more interesting places like Bali Aga (an original old Balinese village where still people live in), Tanah lot, the beautiful riceterrasses in the midwest, a coffeeplantage, the hot springs of Banjar, the vulcano and the rainforest in the north of the island. He takes IDR 350000 for a daytour ($45AUD) which is very cheap comparing to other drivers I asked. For this prices he carries maximum 5 persons in his new Toyota Avanza with airco and in this price car hire, fuel, parking fees and Agus himself are included. Only visiting the national park in the very west would be 500000 because of the distance. He can also give you a transfer from the airport to your hotel for a good price. If the daytrip takes longer than the normal 8-10 hours, Agus does not ask more money. He also has no connections to souvenir shops and restaurants for commission. You are completely free in going where you want to go! Driving at night you should negotiate with him. You can contact him by email gil.agus@hotmail.com or by phone in Indonesia 08123942814. He will answer your e-mail within 3 days, because he has no internet himself. I'm sure you will not regret choosing him as your driver! Best regards from the Netherlands! Theo

Drivers are everywhere in Bali , There will be a few out front of your hotel , Find a good english speaking guy and bargain a good price for you and him . Remember he works for someone and has to pay rental fee for his car .
I was in Bali Nov - Dec last year , I use the same driver each time I go I payed him 400,000 rp or which is about $50 au . Alot of other people where paying 300,000 and 350,000 . But I like to help my driver out he's a great guy. His name and number are on my blog at the bottom . Also a few pics and endless ramblings .
