Lombok

by asitrav

"Taman Narmada Temple Complex"

They say ‘you can see Bali in Lombok but you can’t the other way round’.
I can see this through the Balinese architecture and.....

"Mount Agung seen from Lombok"

.....the mighty Mount Agung seen from the west coast of the island.

"Lumbung (Sasak's traditional house)"

The other reference for Lombok, Indonesia, is ‘The Island with 1000 mosques’.
I was in Lombok where the main ethnic group here is the Sasak, notable with their unique traditional houses.

"Senggigi Beach"

Local Indonesian friends used to mention the beautiful Senggigi beach, on the west coast and there was where I stayed.

"Gili Air Island"

They also said about Gili Islands which I had also visited where white sandy beach and crystal clear blue sea made it a perfect spot for water activities including snorkeling.
Well, I must say that the neighbouring Bali is a far better place, though much more crowded and commercialized…..

Getting there and more...

by balisunshine

"Getting there:"

The cheapest way of getting to Lombok
from Bali is by big vehicle carrying passenger ferries
which leave Padang Bai on Bali’s east coast hourly and
dock at Lembar, a kind of Sydney harbor without the buildings
in Lombok’s south west.

The trip takes 3 to 4 hours.
The cost is $3, and the 3 hours to Bangsal by local buses,
changing in Mataram and Senggigi, will cost about the same.

However a much less complicated way is to
use one of the big Indonesian transport companies like
Perama or Nominasi.

No direct shore to shore ferry but Perama Travel,
can pick you up at the hotel in Bali,
take you there via their very slow ferry to Lombok
and then bus and ferry to the islands for $15 inclusive.
Prices subject to change

Perama Travel - south end of Jln Legian near Bemo corner.

From Padang Bai go to Sengiggi ( Lomok )
then from Senggigi to the Gillis

"Traveling by Boat"

Unless you leave Kuta Bali really early,
you will not make the last boat to the islands.
Perama for instance is too late
(although they sometimes run an afternoon boat from Senggigi) –
but Senggigi is a nice place to spend the night
with plenty of restaurants, lots of accommodations
of all standards and some nightlife.

Eitherwise, taking the ferry from Bali to Lombok
and then on to Gili,
will take up most of your day.
11 hours to go and another 11 to come back.
So unless you want to spent your day traveling by boat,
then consider flying to Lombok and
then taking the boat.

You can charter a ferry to Gili Trawangan, the farthest island

There is also a fast ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar
called the “Lombok Express”, taking one hour for $6.
Some of the transport companies link their shuttle buses
to this ferry and usually you can get right thru in one day.

Another fast ferry is the luxurious“Bounty”
Bali Bounty Group which runs
3 times a week from Benoa harbour near Kuta
in Bali onto a platform a km or so from Gili Meno
(their jetty at Bounty hotel on Meno is currently storm damaged),
from where you are shuttled across to the islands.
However it has been seen recent info saying
Bounty has not run this high season.

"Getting stopped before the Harbour"

You can get a taxi at the airport directly to Bangsal
(it is a fixed price - maybe 75k max)
which is where the ferries leave to the Gilis.

Bangsal has a bad reputation for hassles.
It is a bit hectic but no real problem.
Just be aware of some of the pointers to follow.

It is only a 400m trip from
the carpark where
taxis and buses drop you, to the boat –
easily walked if your luggage is not huge.

Otherwise 5000rp (less than one dollar) per person
for the cidimos seemed to be acceptable,
although they will ask for more.

Always agree on the price first.
Don't buy boat tickets off anyone in the carpark
or on the way down the road.

Nor allow yourself to be steered
to the restaurant across the street,

You ware warned: they will approach you,
and try to convince you that
you need to buy your return ticket before hand ,
try to sell you half of Gili Trawangan & Lombok
along with a RTW ticket for $25 all up.

For another $2 they will throw in
a night with Miss Indonesia.

"At the Harbour"

Go to the boat ticket office right on the beach to the left –
a whitish building about 20m from the water.

Note that if you arrive after about 4pm you
are unlikely to get a boat unless you charter one individually.

Don't allow a porter to grab
your heavy bag from the cidimo or
a boat on return until you fix a price –
it seems from discussion that 2000 per item is the go.

"The Air, Land & Sea Combo"

If you decide not to
spend the whole day traveling by boat,
& do the land and sea combo thing instead:

Lombok’s Mataram airport is international –
and there has been a regular Silk Air flight from Singapore.

Trouble is, with the introduction of
the $US25 visa on arrival this year,
Mataram was not designated as
one of the places where you can buy the visa.

So unless you organize a visa before departure,
they send you right back to Singapore!

No problems flying into Bali
and hopping across from there.

There are very cheap fares from
Bali’s Denpaser airport to Mataram
on mainland Lombok -
Merpati was charging $US25 one way.
Denpasar-Mataram takes around 25mins.

Mataram airport is less than an hour by taxi
where motorised praus will transfer you
to the islands for a few dollars in around 20 to 45 minutes.

Be warned:

The Taxis at the airport refuse to use their meters,
setting the transfer to 75,000 Rp.
We were able to negotiate the rate down to 50,000.

But with the prices of petrol raising up 50% more,
those days of cheap transportation are changing.

Airport Fess do apply.
Calculate around 30,000 RP p.p. each way.

The have a regular flight between Lombok to Jakarta and Surabaya.

There are 4 flights per day on
Mon., Tues., Wed., Fri. & Sat. on Merpati.
You can also send them an SMS
at 6288 for flight information and reservation.

Because of poor ventilation,
these small aircrafts when
parked in the sun too long,
get very hot and smelly.

Yuck!

It is important to reconfirm,
because all flights are on small planes
and it is very easy to get bumped.

HI!

Trang (no direct flights), Phuket & Krabi (west coast of Thailand) will be a better bet.....though why not go to places like Lombok (Indonesia)?
