Should I bring a towel to Gili Trawangan?
Ok. Ok.
Bringing a beach towel may be bulky,
if you are a light traveler.
You can find them on the island for 100,000 Rp
before negotiating.
And yes..you'll help the economy too

Unique Quality: Sunsets!!

This was an excellent resort set on the slopes of a steep Hill. We negotiaited a deluxe suite for only $20 a night due to the economic situation at the time as well as being out of season. The only drawback was that the deluxe suites were higher up (we were about 100 large stone steps up) but the views were amazing and sunsets unsurpassable so it is worth the climb. Our rate also included breakfast, the prices are normally $70-100.
Unique Quality: There is a lovely pool where you can order drinks from your sun lounger. All the rooms have small verandahs so you can enjoy the views.

Hi Y'All
I'm going to Bali and Lombok in June this year (07). My initial plans are to fly to Bali, and then get over to Lombok for 3 weeks, returning to spend maybe 3-4 nights in Bali.
I'm looking for an "off the beaten track" experience. Some of my main aims are to climb Mt.Rinjani, Trek to the waterfalls in the forrests, Dive for 4 days or so on the Gilis and travel to the beaches on the southwest coast of Lombok near Kuta.
Does anyone have any good recommendations or advice that might add to this experience?
In view of what I am looking for and wanting to do, how many days is it worth spending in Bali, is 3 or 4 nights enough?
Hi there,
Perhaps you can visit http://www.lombok-network.com/ for further information about Lombok. Spending night in Bali...well, it will depend on your travel destination in Bali. As for me, 5 or 6 days would be great.
Regards,
Vika
Hi,
Sounds like a great holiday. I have been to Lombok twice, once in 1997 and agin in Nov 2006. However, my stay in 2006 was only for 5 days in Kuta in the south but I loved it- so scenic- really wonderful.
Stayed at agreat place a couple of kms from the beach called Mimpimanis owned by English woman Gemma and her Balinese husband Made.
Check out the details http://www.mimpimanis.com Although the homestay is only new opened in July 2005 it is featured in both Rough Guide Bali/Lombok and South East Asia books and now in the new Lonely Planet.
Gemma also has another website with an active forum on Lombok. There are quite a few expats on Lombok who post on there so you will get some great up to date info' in what is happening there. Why not join and ask your questions. http://groups.msn.com?LombokLovers
Have a wonderful time- wish it was me- but alas this year I must work.
Pamela.
I have not climbed Rinjani myself, but the travellers I spoke to last year in other parts of Indonesia when I did a 5.5 month trip through Indonesia said that climbing Rinjani, though very strenuous was the highlight of their trip.
Here is a link you will need to cut and paste for information on Lombok from searching Thorn tree
http://search.lonelyplanet.com/ttsearch.do?Ntt=Lombok
try to begin your trek up rinjani in senaru not sembalun lawang ,leaving from senaru gives you the first day(on a 3 day trek, the best option in my view)through the rain forest and not through the open pastures from sembalun (very hot).although the first day gives an ascent of around 2000meters it does not feel to bad .if you do not walk or scramble up mountains on a regular basis consider some walking before you go ,otherwise the trip may be tough for you ,apart from that it's fairly easy to get to the top ,not too strenuous ,saying that i had been in new zealand for 2 months climbing mountains so my physical fitness had improved a lot ,but you do not have to carry too much up rinjani as you hire a guide and porters who carry most things for you.check out my lombok page for a more detailed description of rinjani and a few pictures ,and enjoy your trip.

Gilli -Air
To reach this island from Lombok, you have to travel in small boats with out-riggers and you get ferried from the dark sands of Lombok to the Desert Islands of the Gilli Isles, where we stayed was wonderful with shady palm trees ,sandy beachs, and no mechanisation, there are no cars, and no roads! The only way to get around is by Horse and Buggy.
The only noise is the jangling of the horses chains on the buggies.
The place is wonderful and it has the only blue coral, which I have seen, it is endangered, but it really is blue!
I can recommend this place to you, in the hope that you will continue to respect this wonderful place- The beaches are out of this world, white broken coral just helps to highlight the whiteness of the sand. One thing you must do if you don't get the chance to dive is to travel in a glass-bottom boat, it costs very little and is well worth the trip. My only disappointment is that I was only there for a week!

The have a regular flight between Lombok to Jakarta and Surabaya.
Because of poor ventilation,
these small aircrafts when
parked in the sun too long,
get very hot and smelly.
Yuck!
It is important to reconfirm,
because all flights are on small planes
and it is very easy to get bumped.
This is the celebration that usually happens one week after the Hari Raya. Was in Lombok when it happened.
Everyone was dressed in finery and were all either congregated in a common Village Square or in Sengigi Town.
The whole town was lively and you could see smiles everywhere.
This is a scenic cruise to see the remote northern side of Lombok and the highlands.
It's an amazing drive through high country roads, valleys and mountains.
There are many things to see and you should include a stop at Senaru and Sembalun on your way around the north.
Expect the trip to take 1 full day and it would be your opportunity to see the Telu religion which combines Hindu practices with Islam most evident in a town called Bayan.

There is a lovely pool where you can order drinks from your sun lounger. All the rooms have small verandahs so you can enjoy the views.
