Gili Trawangan soon....

by Tommmo

Hi, almost ready to fly in to Bali and then go on to the Gilis. Appreciate any advice on getting there from Bali, places to stay (under Rp150k) and eat . Also making my way back to Senggigi and on to Kuta Lombok and then back to Bali.
Some recent experiences would be really helpful thanks.

For Kuta Lombok check out this forum created by an English woman Gemma who lives there with her Balinese husband and child.
They have their own homestay called Mimpimanis which is really beautiful- I stayed there for 5 days in November last year.
Some great places to visit down there that way.
If you check out and go into the archives with Kuta Lombok or mimpimanis you should find some other info' written by travellers who have stayed there.
There used to be an Aussie guy Trevor who had written some fantastic advice about Gilis, but I think the site he posted on has closed Tales of Asia.
I will try to find out about it for you. Off to work now.

Travel Tips for Lombok

Bring what you needin Gili Trawangan

by balisunshine

When traveling to Bali,
you will be advised to bring as little as you can,
since the temptation to buy is so big.

But at Gili Trawangan,
it's the opposite.

You won't need to wear that much cloths,
since you can hang out in a sarong and bathing suit,
but any toiletries, batteries, etc.
would be a smart thing to bring along since
you may not find them there
or will be more expensive than in Bali.

Bring mosquito coils, medication for insect bites,
sun protection, Imodium, panadol, etc

Store are very limited.

And don't forget to bring your smile!

Singang Gila Waterfall

by cadzand

Lombok is dominated by Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia's highest volcano and the second highest point in the archipelago. Mt.Rinjani is 3,726 meters high and dominates the north-central section of the island. The volcano is used as a focal point for worship. Trekking through this area is both challenging and rewarding. Guides are recommended

On our way to Mount Rinjani, we had a leisurely walk to Singang Gila waterfall. Nice place to cool down after climbing the many stairs up and down the hills.

Trekking at Mount Rinjani

by Svitata

If you have more than a couple of days to spend in Lombok, try a 3day 2 night hike up Mount Rinjani. I heard the view is spectacular. I didn't have time to do that so I just spent my time relaxing.

I didn't find Lombok very interesting as there aren't many sights to see, but if you're interested in the indigenous culture, you may want to visit the Sasak village. I have some photos and write up in my travelogue.

If you're into snorkeling or diving, you may want to take a day trip or stay 1 night in Gili Trawangan. You can also visit the other smaller Gili islands, Gili Meno and Gili Air. See my travelogue for more details.

snorkeling/diving on the gili islands

by bahaiano

on the 3 gili islands, located northwest of lombok, you ll find a place that comes very close to paradise. white beach, corals right next to the beach, a bunch of submarine animals no mororised vehicles, and a very calm athmosphere mixed up with good restaurants and some nightlive, that can easily been avoided if you like so. my pension was a bit outside the center right next to the beach. you ll find it in the "hotel-tips".

when i was there the first time, i did the padi. there are some dive centers. they all charge the same rates (open water about 300 Euro) or15 euro per fundive. this was a great experience.

the secoond time there i spent my time relaxing (my feet), hanging and having good meals. it was right after i was about a week on a boat to flores followed ba the rinjani trek. so i was really looking foreward to the amazing (non-indonesian) food on the tourist-spot. pizza, faijtas and so on. i likeed the indonesian food, but after a few days rice and vegetables my stomach rebells!

besides, look at the pic of the gilis. the redlight gives you a link from where this had been taken :-) advise: children, do not go for it, ther was an expert (me) taking the pic :-)
