  • Stay here if you smoke and don't need sleep

    by

We stayed here for one night on a layover. The rest of our group stayed next door at the Ambacang. After a dismal check in process, we were given rooms on the floor facing the back of the hotel. The reeked of stale smoke and the airconditioning was barely working. We went out for dinner and on our return discovered that a disco on the 2nd floor was in full swing. There was doof-doof echoing through the room. There was no way I was falling asleep. After 2 phone calls and 3 trips to the front desk we were finally moved at midnight to the room directly opposite us- where you couldn't here the disco at all! They made a big deal about how we were being given a significant upgrade but that meant nothing to me as we were getting up at 5am for an early morning flight.
The disco is on every night but Sundays and goes to 2 or 3am. They are more than aware of the problem! So if you must stay here, make sure your room faces the front, as far as possible from the 2nd floor. Otherwise stay next door. It is cheaper and better.

Satay Buffet

by THLIN about Hotel Bumi Minang...

This hotel is said to be the best in town. It has a swimming pool, a conference hall and Malaysian Airlines' office. There are many restaurants in the hotel, including Itailan, local, and Chinese. We picked up this local buffet to celeate Sabrina's 20+ B'day. There was alive band where customers could make a dedication to someone. The singer there can really sing; therefore, we had a jazz "happy birthday" to Sabrina.
The price was amazingly cheap in comparision to shopping standard of its neighbouring country Singapore or Taiwan. It's cost us Rph70,000 per person.
thanx to Mr. Au I have to admit taht the only thing good here is satey. Their salad was not-so-fresh, lettuce looked "week" and undelicious. Their browny was nice but little bit too sweet; while local cake was not enjoyable or welcome by us. However, their satey really made things up. I would give a huge credit to satey. You can chose from chicken, beef, squid, and scramps. They also fried vegetable mixed with seafoods. The juice is the ony drink there that needs no extra charge, of course water is another one.

Getting around Padang and beyond

by khal2zu

I personally will not recommend self drive if you are driving to Bukit Tinggi from Padang. Not only the roads are narrow and winding but drivers there seem to break all rules when driving. So local drivers know best!
For a 2 year old car (Kijang Innova - Toyota) with a driver and fuel it costs Rp 650,000 per day. This allows you to go out of town to Bukit Tinggi, for example. For self drive and excluding fuel, it is Rp 250,000 cheaper.
Counter is located at Bumi Minang Hotel, Padang.

Padang Bukit Tinggi

"Land of Minangkabau"

Padang is the capital of West Sumatra . Being near the equator its hot and humid. Its usually a transit city for travellers to get to other parts of West Sumatra.
Minangkabau is just an hour away by air from Singapore. Twice weekly flights on Tue and Thurs is operated by Tiger airways.
Minangkabau literally means menang kerbau (win a buffalo fight). History has it that a territorial war was settled by the two sides putting their best buffalo in a fight. The winner is the fight would be the winner of the disputed territory. The minangs won of course. Hence their buildings are symbolic of this and reflect the buffalo horns and you find them everywhere.

"Bukit Tinggi"

Bukit Tinngi is usually the destination most travellers go for from Padang although the islands off the land of Minangkabau is well sought after too. Its 2 hours drive from Padang along narrow and winding roads. Its located approx 900m above sea level, hence its air is fresh and cool especially in the mornings.

"Bumi Minang Hotel"

One of the top, not necessarily the best, hotels in Padang. The typical Minang roof is always there.
