Kampoeng Baron: Best bet in Baron area

We drove form Baron to Indrayanti beaches looking for an acceptable place to stay. Any acommodation at Baron Bay and Krakal beach is very run-down, Kukup beach does not have any. On a hill at Sundak beach someone built a couple of nice bungalows in a rock garden setting, But there was only a boy in attendance quoting the outrageous price of Rp 12 million per night; the manager could not be reached (Mr. Patuk, HP 0817 465 942). The cabins at Indrayanti we found overpriced (Rp 350,000) for the little comfort they offer.

Unique Quality: So we eventually returned to Kampoeng Baron, which lies at the turnoff from the main road to Baron Bay. We had one of the two rooms in local style with air-co and out-door bathroom for Rp 400,000 (2012 low season price). For bigger parties they also have a cottage (sleeping 4 pp, Rp 600,000) and a villa (sleeping 6 pp, Rp 1,000,000).

Welcome drink and snack, and a good Indonesian or Western breakfast are included. We also recommend the restaurant for dinner or lunch, the alternative being a mi rebus or such like in a beach warung. The restaurant doubles as an art gallery; paintings are for sale as well as some rustic furniture.

To sum up, Kampoeng Baron is by far your best bet in the area.

Address: Jalan Baron km 21, Gunungkidul 55881, DIY.
Directions: Coming from Yogyakarta, it is just 100 m past the gate where you pay the admittance fee of Rp 4,000 for the Baron, Kukup, Sepanjang, Drini, Krakal and Sundak beaches.

Queen of the South: Great resort at Parangtritis

Coming along the coast from Pacitan we were looking for accommodation in Parangtritis and luckily found the Queen of the South resort, because this is the only place rising above losmen quality in Parangtritis. Actually it is a beautiful resort, high on limestone cliffs, overlooking but isolated from the sometimes crowded beach below.
We learned that the resort was built by a nationalized Dutchman and started business in 1995. However, it was hard hit by the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake. It took three years before the resort could receive guests again, in a more modest way.

Unique Quality: Actually, when we arrived in November 2012, the resort looked so much in need of maintenance that we doubted it was open at all. Once inside however, we were reassured. The reception hall and restaurant, both pendopo's, are beautiful examples of Javanese architecture. The pool with its pavilion are in perfect shape. The spacious bungalow we stayed in could do with some repairs, but was satisfactory for the price of Rp 450,000 (w/o hot water; Rp 550,000 with hot water).
From the garden one has great views over the beach and the ocean. A flight of stairs, over 100 steps, some banisters still broken, leads down to the beach. Although we were the only guests, the restaurant provided a good dinner in a short time.

Address: Parangtritis village, Kretek district, Bantul regency. PO Box 001, Kretek, Bantul.
Directions: From Parangtritis bus station take the road east and uphill. Where indicated turn into the broken road to the resort.

Sheraton Mustika Hotel: Luxury Hotel

Sheraton, by its name signifies luxury and this Hotel is no different although the rooms have now aged and in need of a makeover.

The amenities and service are what you'd expect from a 5 star establishment but really a good makeover to bring the facilities up to mark.

Breakfast is varied and for the night hawks, the night spot Hugo's is by the entrance of the Hotel, about a kilometer walk but the Hotel provides free shuttle to and fro. Free shuttle is also provided to the airport which is within close proximity - about 5 minutes ride away.

To the Malioboro area is quite far - reckon about 10 km.

Unique Quality: The entrance is very grand and sited at the highest level - 7th floor so as you driving up to the lobby give you a sense its grandness.

Rooms are therefore below the lobby; 6th floor downwards which make a change from most normal Hotels.

Whiz Hotel: Business Hotel

This is a new hotel at Jl Dagen just off Malioboro and within walking distance to the Malioboro Shopping Centre (5 minutes).

Hotel is basic with a small reception counter. Rates are around IDR 400,000 with breakfast which is a simple fare of choice of local delicacies or bread with unlimited coffee/tea and juice.

Rooms are simple with a small LCD TV and all the basic amenities but being new is clean.

For the price and the location, and being new, would say it's a fair price to pay.

HOTEL GARUDA (Inna Garuda): At the Corner of Malioboro Street

Located at the North Corner of Yogyakarta's main thoroughfare-Malioboro street, in front of Yogaya Railway Station. Hotel Garuda was an old Hotel but very fine architecture and was stablished since the Dutch Era. It was at the Heart of Yogyakarta , the service, facilities and hospitality is as a standard of 4* hotel

Unique Quality: A great view of Malioboro Street and Station TUGU(a railway station), not far from Yogya's shopping center, at the street that the life run for 24 hours

Novotel Jogja: Superb View..

I was here following a tip from a local friend. Located next to a small shopping mall, it is fairly easy to get away from the over priced room service menu. :-)

The room was fine although the hotel was a bit crowded.

The only unpleasant event was on the buffet breakfast where we felt like being rushed all the time. Perhaps due to the crowds??

However, the friendliness of the wait staff made up for the sour look of the supervisors in the restaurant. :-)

Unique Quality: We had a room in the 6th level. As we arrived late at night, we didnt realize that we had such an amazing view of Mt Merapi until the next morning. We also had a view of a kampung behind the hotel.

I spent my mornings looking at little kids kissing their mums' hands before going to school and counting the chicken b4 taking my shower. :-)
