Mt Merapi Hiking

by marcus_gsh

Hi,

I will stay 3 nights from 14 November 2010.
I wish to have a hike to the peak of Mt. Merapi.
May I know the details? must be in tour package? how much? any agent recommended?

Hi,
I never been to Merapi, but I heard from friends the hiking usually start from Selo, small town at the north of Yogyakarta.
You can find hiker base camp at Selo, and you can ask for guide from the locals. But I don't know their fee.
I hope this help.
have a nice trip!

Yes, the best base to start from is Selo, in the saddle between Merbabu and Merapi mountains. If you are trained and in good condition you can make the climb (from 1600 m to 2800 m) in three to four hours. Best to start from Selo at around 2 am, so as to be on the top at sunrise.
You can go to Selo by public transport the day before, take a nap in the village and hire a guide there (my estimate is that they would ask Rp 150,000 or 200,000, but I am not sure of that). Plenty of villagers sitting waiting there to be hired.
If you want to avoid the hassle to find Selo by public transport, you can buy a tour at an agent in Yogya, they will then also have a guide ready.
The route to Selo is: bus from Yogya via Kartasura to Boyolali, minibus from there to Selo.

Hi,
When going to Merapi volcano, tourists can visit via some area. Via Kali adem, Kali Urang, or via village Selo. For tracking to the top is possible via Selo village. It needs 3-4hours to get the top via selo village. To see sunrise tracking start at midnight. Another good area is Kali adem to see Merapi. It's just zbout 30 minute from Jogja. Contact local guide/driver at txi_rental@yahoo.co.id is recommended. You can arrange an nice advanture in jogja with him.

cheer !

status of volcanic activity of Mount Merapi (2965 masl) in the border region Yogyakarta and Central Java was raised to alert on Thursday (09/23/2010). Center of Investigation and Technology Development Kegunungapian (BPPTK) Yogyakarta elevate the status of Merapi from normal active became alarmed, because the quake multi-phase (MP) or surface seismic and volcanic earthquakes show significant improvement.

"Since 12 September 2010 Mount Merapi seismic data show a significant increase for earthquake or volcanic earthquake MP," said Head of Section of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, Sri Sumarti BPPTK.

Then, he said, on 20 September 2010 an evaluation of data and a resume, which was indeed increased significantly, so it took steps to raise the status of volcanic activity of Mount Merapi from normal active to alert.

Travel Tips for Yogyakarta

FROM YOGYAKARTA to BROMO

by meiyergani

If You have morning flight to Yogyakarta, then you'd better make an itinerary as follow:
As you out Yogyakarta ADI SUCIPTO AIR PORT, just go out to take an intercity bus 'TRANs YOGYA'(check the location to the air port information desk, bus fare is IDR 3,500/US.$ 0.3)to the nearby Tourist spot PRAMBANAN TEMPLE, it was about 10 t0 15 minutes to the PRAMBANAN Bus Halt, from the Hal you could see PRAMBANAN TEMPLE at the east side and it was just walking distance.
Then you could take the same TRANS YOGYA bus which could escort you to JOMBOR Bus Station. From JOMBOR you could take a transfer bus to BOROBUDUR Temple, the bus would stop at BOROBUDUR Bus Station, then you could take Becak, or Horse cart to BOROBUDUR Temple where you could enjoy SUNSET while you explore BOROBUDUR, then you could stay a night at a hotel around Borobudur for watching SUNRISE in the next morning.
After Sunrise, please in rush to take a bus to JOMBOR Station, then by TRANS YOGYA BUS to YOGYAKARTA's UMBUL HARJO inter province bus terminal, take a bus to SURABAYA which would take you to SURABAYA BUNGURASIH Bus Terminal in about 7 hours (it would better by morning bus).
From BUNGURASIH take a bus to Probolinggo which would take about 3 hours to Probolinggo Bus Station. From Probolinggo bus terminal, take a mini bus which would take you to BROMO (Cemoro Lawang), stay one night at one of so many accommodation over there, I recommend you to HOTEL BROMO PERMAI (check to the mini bus driver) and you should get up early in the next morning at 03.00 am to see Sunrise. You could Explore BROMO Mountain ( popular with Tengger Caldera)by Horse Riding or TOYOTA HARD TOP 4 wheel drives.
Please Enjoy YOGYA and BROMO and have a nice trip to Indonesia. Regards from Gani in Bogor.

get around Malioboro street

I agree with you (craneboywill) abt Mirota Store. You can find many souvenirs, handicrafts and clothes there. In front of that store, there is Beringharjo Market. If you wanna see the hectic Batik market, this is the right place. And dont forget to keep your wallet from pickpocket.

Ask like local’s ask

by Goldenboy

When you met locals, after a while, they will ask how many kids you have. It is how they appreciate your fertility I guess, hahaha, kidding. But it is true. Just reply them politely. Especially for me, I am not married yet. So they will ask about marital status etc. None of their business, of course, but it is a social community value here to grow up, marry and have kids. That’s what life is for, for most of them.

Outdoor theatre

by kyoub

Just 17 km southeast of Yogya, you will be able to see the Prambanan Temples.
They were built in the 9th century, some were destroyed by the Merapi mountain eruption in 1006.
There are great views of the mountain from here.

The park holds Ramayana ballets in the outdoor theater almost nightly, May- Oct.

There is a bus from Yogya to the park or you can hire a driver to take you there.

The Royal Guards of the Kraton

by bpacker

If you noticed carefully, all the royal guards at the Kraton wear a royal batik weave that is not to be used by the members of the public. And strapped on their back is a deadly kris that is supposed to be used to defend the king in times of danger ! Now that their main job consists of showing tourists around, I don't suppose they'll use it on a holiday maker who turns out to be nuisance?

Where: At the Kraton, Yogyakarta
Note: Please ask for permission before you photograph them, they'll oblige but some fellows will maintain an austere pose for you.
