Jakarta - Yogyakarta - Surabaya

by kikai_soul

Hi Everyone,

I just have few questions. We'll be in Jakarta on the June 29 and I already booked first flight to Yogyakarta for that day. But I read somewhere that delayed in flights is common. What can we expect? Here's our itinerary:

1st day - Yogyakarta ( Prambanan...)
2nd day - Borobudur
Travel by night to Surabaya (for Bromo). We still haven't decided yet if we will take a package tour to Bromo. Can you give me some average price of the tour.
3rd day- Bromo - Will the tour last the whole day?
4th day- Still contemplating if we'll take the bus to Jakarta or book a flight now. I checked with Air Asia and its around 365,000 IDR. Should I book now? This will be more convenient though as we can still tour Surabaya by day. But if we take the train, we'll have to leave early for a 10 hours ride.
We need to be in Jakarta airport by 9PM. Do we need to book the train ride prior to our travel?

I will appreciate any input. Thanks!

Delayed flights are common but not usually too long. It does rain here alot. Not usually a worry unless you are on a tight schedule. Public holidays can be a bad time.
I hope you are staying overnight in Surabaya.
For Bromo it depends on how adventurous you want to be.
Easy to check prices for package tours on the internet.
You can take a public bus to Bromo on your own. It will save money but it can be tricky. Many hotels in Bromo are close to each other so you can shop for those when you are there but maybe a better idea to book hotel in advance.
If you do it all yourself then you will also need to haggle with a jeep driver in Bromo for the actual tour. The actual tour starts about 3am and usually finishes about mid morning depending on how long you want to stay on the Bromo caldera.
If you want to take the train the same day as your flight then take a flight instead. Atually flights can be cheaper than the train but usually only a few dollars more. I think the train is nice to take atleast 1 time in the day just to see the country. But you will probably not make your flight since the trains get delayed also. You can always buy tickets for the train if they are available.
Hope that helps a little

1st day seems ok, if you arrive in the morning or early afternoon...
I used local airlines in Indonesia about 6 times and non of them were delied but maybe we were lucky :) I recommend you to visit Ramayana show in Prambanan if it is available in the day then you will be there...
2nd day for Borubudur you will need few hours, my advice for you is go there in the early morning as earlier as possible, around 9 am it become very crowded with school groups and it is very hot in the day time.
3d day: it is complicated to move from Jogyakarta to Bromo and do the tour in 1 day... Because Bromo tour is actually sunrise on the volcano and starts around 3-4 am. To be in Cemoro Lawang in the evening (village near Bromo) you have to be in Surabaya latest at midday, way from Surabaya to Probolingo will take something 2-3 hours (depends on traffic), near Probolingo bus station (on the left in the main road) you will need to take mini bus to the village Cemoro Lawang, so around 5-6 pm you will be there and can order a private Jeep for your sunrise tour (as I remember we paid 35 USD for car).
4th day in the morning you will do a tour, it will finish around 8-9 am you can take breakfast and take the way back to Surabaya and then fly to Jakarta. Traffic is horrible in Jawa, so it is better not to drive 10 hours to Jakarta but use the train or even better plane.

Thanks Brian & Melek02. Your insights are helpful.

I hope the weather will be good during our stay. We'll be staying overnight in Surabaya.

I read somewhere that we can take package tours from Yogyakarta (on our 2nd night, we might go with the couch service going to Bromo).

Thanks again! :)

Drop off your shoes, please!

by Goldenboy

If we have a chance to visit someone’s home, it is polite to put off your branded shoes or your slipper or whatever under your foot. Even when they say don’t, cause they normally not really mean it when saying that. It is still the same though their floor is not that clean. Weird?

Traditional Baskets

by bpacker

Right in the heart of Jalan Marlioboro, Yogyakarta lies a cavernous old market. Within in, you'll find everything for sale under the sky, clothes, meat, spices, flowers, fruit. You name it, they have it. This market is at least 3x the size of Ben Tanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City.

A lady lumbers along, the precious fruit in a basket strapped to her back. Round, prickly crowns of green with seeds of golden flesh.

by catkin about Toms Silver

Toms Silver is probably the best known and biggest silver factory in the Yogyakarta area. You get the factory tour which shows you how they shape and polish the silver then of course there is the inevitable shop at the end to make your purchases. In the shop there is no end of silver jewellery, table ware etc. We bought a little silver model of a becak as a reminder of Yogyakarta.
