Absolutely fabulous hotel
I booked a 3-night stay on the hotel's website for June 2008 and the cost was less than $100/night. This was an executive room in the old wing (the original governor's residence) with buffet breakfast included. (They have a new wing with balconies overlooking the hotel pool which might be worth looking into.) The room was very nicely equipped with tea/coffee facilities, bathrobe, hair-dryer, safe, luxury bath products, etc. There was also a nice sitting area as well as a balcony that gives on the courtyard with the beaux-arts fountain. The hotel just oozes charm because of the history of the building as well as the architeture. I was surprised about the level of service -- which arguably was almost as impeccable as that at some of the grande dames of Asian luxury hotels such as the Peninsula and the Mandarin Oriental. After a couple of quick queries at the reception, I found out that the hotel had just been rewarded 5 stars. The Grande Mercure is a sister hotel chain to Sofitel, the more luxury line. The only reason why this hotel is not a Sofitel, is because of its price range. So make a booking before the secret gets out and the price goes up!

Highly recommended
We stayed here three nights in November 2007.
It is a very attractive and well-decorated hotel, with a relaxing ambience. Part of the hotel is the old Dutch Governor's residence, and this is refelected in the architecture and detail. There is also a pleasant pool and spa.
The rooms are not huge, but well laid out; the reception desk and housekeeping staff are excellent.
The one point for improvement was dinner and the evening service. Dinner was rather average and very slow to arrive.
I would definitely recommend this hotel as probably the best in Yogyakarta.
