1-Day Visit to Borobudur
by Sharrie
1-Day Visit to BOROBUDUR, YOGYAKARTA. Borobudur Temple, one of the 7 wonders of the world {the other 6 are: Great Wall of China, The Sphinx (Egypt), Leaning Tower of Pisa, Taj Mahal of India, Niagara Falls & The Grand Canyon} is the largest and oldest Buddhist Monument in the world. Built in the 9th century & abandoned in the 11th century, this wonderful architecture has only been excavated recently and restored to its former glory under UNESCO and has since been declared a national monument in 1983. Embracing the elegance & grandeur of Borobudur & Prambanan temple sites, the graceful city of Yogyakarta is also famous for its classical arts including Javanese dances, batik making, music & leather puppet performances.
A visit to any of these cultural centers leave one with memories that'll last a lifetime :)))
am I a celebrity or what?
by xaver
Not far from yogyakarta, there is the Borobudur temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Indonesia, as it is a really big and important place, it becomes a tourist attraction for Indonesians coming from every island.
I was there on early July that means school holidays, so the tepmple was full of young students coming from all the remote villages in Java and other islands.
Once inside the temple I could not believe that almost any student stopped me asking to take a photo, my shy indonesian friend practically ran away leaving me there taking photos and giving smiles like the most stupid Holliwood celebrity. The guide, then explained to me that these young students often never saw a "martian" before. The many photos I take really made me wonder how celebrities can enjoy all these stuffs, I just missed to visit the temple as I wished, but sure had a more unexpecting and shocking experience.
‘Yes’ is expected!
by Goldenboy
If local people say yes, doesn’t always means yes. It’s their politeness to say yes, even sometimes not agree on something. For example, when they ask you, whether do you have lunch yet, you will be expected to say ‘yes, I did’, even you’re not really. They can refuse your offer, while the truth they want it bad! As I am a Javanese too, I don’t really agree to this custom. Most today’s people won’t agree too. But some of them will still remain the same.

The Sultan who loved to cook
by bpacker
Inside the Karaton, lies a museum dedicated to the late Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, the father of the present Sultan. Besides fighting for independence the late Sultan was a good cook who could whip up a mean soup Buntut (ox tail soup). Curiously enough, even his royal oven mitts are on display, to prove the point that he could cook!
