Kastukane Shukubo: Simple temple lodgings

I did not sleep but
oh! This magical forest
uplifts my spirits

The temple lodgings are simple but clean and friendly and right next to the beginning of the climb. The food is much tastier than I have found most Japanese food to be (I can't eat seafood, which is probably why I don't enjoy it). There are many other lodgings available in the area, but it certainly helps to have a Japanese speaker help with the arrangements. The food is strictly vegetarian. You may be invited to watch the temple's leader perform morning prayers, which is a great experience. The rooms are large and with tatami mats and futons. There are communal baths for men and women, but they are small

The view from the bedrooms is stunning, the atmosphere peaceful and relaxed, the location easy for the bus back to Tsuruoka
