Travel Tips for Nagoya

Shinkansen from Nagoya to Shizuoka

by kiwigal_1

It would take 1 1/2 hours on the Kodama Shinkansen from Nagoya to Shizuoka which is on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines.
The Hikari Shinkansen (faster) takes an hour and stops at less places on the way.

NAGOYA CASTLE: The city's most...

by flyingkiwi

NAGOYA CASTLE: The city's most famous sight, it has been home to some pretty powerful people. Originally the Imagawa family built the castle in the early 16th century, but Oda Nobunaga made it his residence before building his masterpiece at Azuchi. Tokugawa Ieyasu built a castle in 1612 to protect eastern Japan from attacks by the feudal lords of Western Japan. Ieyasu gave the castle to his seventh son, Yoshinao. The massive stone walls actually have signs identifying stones 'donated' by various feudal lords.

Bombing raids during World War II leveled the castle; only three turrets and the massice stone walls are original. Unfortunately, when the city of Nagoya rebuilt the keep in 1952, no attempt was made to reconstruct its interior according to the original plan. The keep houses a museum with hundreds of objects from the original castle. Nagoya adopted the huge gilded shachi (dolphins on the roof) as its symbol.
