I was at Zenkoji Temple just after the New Year and so there were many people visiting to pray for the coming year and to buy good luck talismans, charms etc.
Inside the temple. You throw some money under those big lights, clap and pray. Praying for health and/or money tends to be the standard!

The sign reads: Benevolent deities who save souls from pain and suffering. Guardians of the six worlds humans souls transmigrate through until they attain enlightement. The six worlds are: heaven, human beings, carnage, beasts, eternally famished devils and hell.
You can wash your hands and take a drink of the pure spring water before entering the temple.

...and then try to pass the smoke over your head with your hand... it smells very nice actually!!
