Ramen Museum

by timewaster

Are there long lines for the ramen restaurants in the museum?
What is the avg cost of a bowl of ramen (small and normal) size?

Re: Ramen Museum

Depending on the time of day, there can be lines. It also depends on which shop you want to eat in. If you go during lunch or around then, especially on weekends and holidays, you'll probably be in for a wait.

Average cost is actually a bit high. You can get half bowls for about 500 yen, but that's by memory only, so don't quote me.

If you are looking for a lot of variety from around Japan, the museum is a good place. If you want a good bowl, just try a shop outside Yokohama station or almost every other major station. Look for white square boards on the walls and you know it's probably good.

thanks.
what is the significance of the "white square boards"?
is it some quality standard the restaurant passed?
do these white boards exists in tokyo as well?

The white boards are for celebrities. There are various people who visit the shops and they tend to sign a white board for each visit. For the small shops, it's one way to say the food was delicious. The boards themselves are the size of possibly a 45 (record album). Note that it isn't always perfect to judge a shop based on a celebrity visiting. :)

Travel Tips for Yokohama

Go to China Town, Yamashita...

by shadowofwind

Go to China Town, Yamashita Koen(the park by the port), Sakuragichou, and area around the Yokohama station.

Sakuragichou and area close by is where action is. There are many shops and bars. It's very modern, but still retains old port city charm(Yokohama is often called Minatomachi, meaning port city).

Yokohama station area is another good area with lots of department stores and izakaya, Japanese style taverns.

Oh don't forget Landmark tower, second tallest in Japan. The view from it is spectacular, if you go there in sunny clear day. Also, the area around has been developed recently and has very 'modern' look. I grew up there, ok?

Not only in Yokohama, but in every place in Japan: the kindness of their people. They love to help foreigners. This sensation is maybe increased because of the FIFA Worldcup but nevertheless I love this people.

I found it was possible to get around Japan and not speak any Japanese. The train system was easy to use. Buses were more difficult because there is very little english involved in them. Getting food is pretty easy. Make sure to ask it they have an english menu. Pointing to displays in the windows are also an easy way to order.

The summer is hot hot hot!

by kjisaac

Pack light, and bring as little luggage as possible. The summer is very hot and humid, so when traveling to Yokohama during that time of year bring lots of shorts and t-shirts. Try not to bring very many pairs of pants or long sleeve shirts, as you'll find you won't be using them all too often, it just gets too hot and sticky to wear. If you don't plan on going to any fancy resturants or you don't have any business meetings, try to avoid pants and long sleeved shirts. You may even find that shorts are sometimes too much clothing in this weather, and it's even hot during the night. Sandles to me were a must have as well Sunscreen, lots and lots of suncreen. But if you're like me and you don't burn no matter what, just bring a small amount. Deodorant and cologne are also good items to bring as well. The heat and the humidity make you sweat a lot, and you don't want to be walking around smelling like a gym locker. Camera, or video-camera and lots of film, there are many places in Yokohama to take pictures of. Bring yourself, a trip to Yokohama just isn't the same if you're not there to experience it firsthand, haha.

Spot the stars

by bonio

We were walking through a park in town and spotted two famous British ex-footballers, who were both in Japan working for TV companies. Ron Atkinson used to be Manager of Man. Utd, WBA and several other clubs, his pal Andy Gray was a Scotland international and played for many English clubs including Wolves and Aston Villa. They were very patient when we asked for a photo!!
