Taking a local tour in Narita
by kamikawalili
Because I was afraid of going around myself, I took a local tour operated by Narita Rainbow Tours. I was so glad that I took the tour after having been dropped off at the airport for the transit flight in the late afternoon. The charge was more than resonable considering the content of the service provided. The guide was simply superb. The highlight of the tour was at the temple when we were in time for the eleven-o'clock service. He took me right by the altar where ordinary people would have hesitated to sit, to observe a mystic ritual of Goma (fire burning religious ceremony) right in front of my eyes. After the service, I was emotionally overwhelmed with awes.

While I waited for my aircraft, I was able to access the internet from a ‘pay’ terminal in the departure lounge in Terminal 1: very convenient. The cost was only 100 Y for ten minutes. On my return I did not find a similar arrangement in Terminal 2, though I didn’t look hard, but there are desks for laptop computer users.
Narita Airport

Narita is very far from the Tokyo city area so I will not really advise you to stay in Narita. The cheapest mean to travel to Tokyo from Narita Airport is by subway. Do not board the cab as it is very very expensive. In Tokyo, I stayed at Asakusa area. To get to the airport, we took the Toei Subway Asakusa line from Asakusa station to Aoto station. At Aoto, take the opposite train on the same platform and get on the train which final destination shows "Narita Airport" along the Keisei line. Total journey one and a half hour and cost 1060 yen. From the airport to Asakusa, we had no problem. However, from Asakusa to Narita, I think we had to alight at Narita station to get to Narita Airport Terminal 1. We didn't alight at the right station and got to walk a very very long way with our luggage to Terminal 2. From terminal 2, we had to take a shuttle bus to terminal 1. We almost missed our flight!
Narita - the city

The city of Narita is a quiet, small city about 10 minutes by train from Narita international airport. It is a good place to go to if you have a long layover. There are several souvenir stores as well as restaurants. There is also a nice temple and 3 story pagoda (if you turn left out of the train station and follow the main road). On new years day, the city hosts thousdands of visitors from all over Japan as they visit the temple for good luck in the new year. It is worth a visit if you are in the area around new years day.
