Nice place with a great on-sen

This hotel is in the ryokan style, meaning you will be provided with yukatas and sleep on tatamis. A ryokan is sort of an inn and sort of a spa. You relax in the baths and have breakfast and dinner prepared for you there. The rooms are spare, but the facilities comprehensive and complimentary.

Okudogo isn't a new building, but it is very well maintained. They can't disguise it's 1970s feel, but that is typical for Japan. Everything works and care is taken to your comfort. The food is superb for dinner, very elaborate, though you can opt for simpler fare. Breakfast is buffet style, so in addition to the eggs and sausage you can expect seaweed salads and miso soup, along with a plethora of unknown dishes and tilted versions of some western breakfast foods.

This is Japan, people smoke all over the place. Beer and sake is sold openly from vending machines as are cigarettes and cold coffee. There are several gift shops, children's entertainment and several places to eat and drink.

Unique Quality: The best thing here is the baths, which feature natural spring water (DON'T wear silver into the baths, it will tarnish badly within minutes). The water in Matsuyama is considered special in some way, and loke the hallmark Dogo On-sen, all the hotels in the city feature it in one way or another. Like all public baths in Japan they are segregated by sex, boys on one side, girls on the other. They rotate sides each day. The baths have most of the usual comforts plus a few more, some of the normal water baths are scented or conditioned with who knows what. They have sauna, massage is available, and as always, the locker rooms are spotless, with full complements of soaps, shaving cream, razors, disposable toothbrushes and colognes. (For those of you who have heard the Japanese are cleaner than westerners, this is what it looks like in real life). Three adults and one child shared the room for about $400 booked on special.
