Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Now a small city just outside of Fukuoka, Dazaifu used to be the administrative center of Kyushu from around the 8th to the 12th century. The most famous among Dazaifu's historic sights is the Dazaifu Tenmangu, the first of several thousands of shrines dedicated to Tenjin across Japan.
Dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, the God of Learning, the shrine is home to many sighseeing spots including the main hall which was built over Sugawara's grave. The expansive grounds are coloured by plum blossoms, camphor trees and irises depending on the season.
Dazaifu can be reached by train from Nishitetsu Tenjin station in 30 minutes.
