The Gazebo at Bogor Botonical Gardens

by lmkluque

Bogor is a city in Indonesia that houses the Bogor Botonical Gardens. It is also a cooler and more refreshing place to be than at lower levels, where the heat and humidity were oppressive.

This Botonicla Garden has a long history and is a show place that shouldn't be missed. Here you can see the lush, exotic flora and fauna of this part of the world and still, throughout the park there are beautiful signs of the Dutch colonial days Indonesia lived under.

Now, the garden is the site of scholarly research and home to the endangered and elusive Rafflesia arnoldi. Called the 'corpse flower' it really reeks, to attract flies for pollination. Almost 1 meter wide and weighing about 9 kilograms, it is by far the largest bloom in the world. I wanted to see this flower, but my timing was off by three days.

KEEP YOUR LANE!!!!

by manuelEB

Don't get distracted by the beauty of sunsets. You are driving in a Japanese highway and even when the speed limit is heavily enforced (100 km/h in the fastest sections *smile*), ALL the automotors -- 5-10 ton trucks included-- run at that speed. Keep your lane, use your back mirror, fasten your belt, pay your taxes, brush your teeth, etc, etc...

Higways are going to be expensive. Stop whining. And yes... In Japan we drive on the wrong side. All those psycotics driving against the "normal direction" (your direction!!!) have the law on their side... (-;

Ride a Bullet Train

by whvcebu

Something I should write about is the unique railroad. Although we do have a good railroad system in Germany, I do not know of anything better than the one in Japan.

The distance between Tokyo and Osaka is approx. 600 km (373 miles) By car about 7 hours with speed limits, with the Shinkansen exactly 3 h and 10 min with the fastest connection, which is the HIKARI train ( light ray). It stops only in Nagoya and Kyoto. I often times went into the dining car to see the speed meter. Top speed goes up to 270 km/h (168 miles/h).

These fast Shinkasen trains are a good alternative to flights. First of all no check in time, secondly, the train stations are right in the middle of the cities. Therefore, no need for unnecessary waiting times. There are practically no delays. There is a saying that your watch runs wrong, if your departure or your arrival seems to be late. I experienced several times that the train became very slow when driving into Osaka terminal. But the train stopped exaxtly when the minute hand of the station clock stepped onto the scheduled arrival time. Stopping is also exactly at the markings on the station according to the entrances to the train. It may vary by 5 cm (2 1/2 inches). I think that is an excellent precision considering that a train has about 15 to 18 carriages. I was always amazed when the Japanese train drivers looked out of the window, hat band tightened around their chin, and watching those markings in order to step onto the final break. Big smiles always! Sayonara.

One more tip to all who intend to travel to Japan. There is a railway pass that can be bought only by foreigners or Japanese living outside of Japan. This pass reduces cost substantially and has a validity of 1, 2 or 3 weeks. It is available for first class (Green car) and economy. It is further valid on all rail way companies throughout entire Japan. Check with Airline office to obtain such Railroad Pass. It is not restricted to the flying in by Japanese Airlines. Any other airline can be used to fly to Japan.

The greatest thing- SHINKANSEN!

by PolishChick

Japan's main island Honshu is covered by a network of high speed train lines-shinkansen- that connect Tokyo with most of the island's major cities and Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu. They are simply awesome!!! I spent tons of time on shinkansens while in Japan, but I really didn`t mind. They are very comfortable, the inside looks like the indise of a plane, and they are very very fast- nowadays they reach speeds of over 300 km/h!!!

However, even the Japanese find them expensive!!! They are devided into the normal car section (expensive) and the green car section (freaking expensive). But, if you`re an owner of a Japanese Rail Pass, which is the bargain of your life, you can ride them 24/7!!! However, I would suggest you leave them to see some sights ;).

Note- there is no use in getting the green car tickets!!! The normal cars are really comfortable, and the only difference is that the green cars have less seats and are usually very empty!!! I usually saw just a couple of very preppy- looking people there, so if you wanna have some real shinkansen experiances the normal car is the place for you :).

What about Hakone-Ginyu?

by merbel

This ryokan looks very nice-Very near train staion Hakone-Yumoto. Setting looks lovely. Would this be a nice place to go this time of year? What should we see in the surrounding area? Should we have a car or can we travel easily be train? Was thinking of 1-2 nights here after Tokyo and then heading to Kyoto and using that as a base for the next three or four nights, exploring Kyoto and taking day trips nearby....
Thoughts? We are wide open to suggestions and are making last minute decisions as we leave for Tokyo in a week and will be there for 5 days before heading out.
Thanks!

This looks like a great place to stay! But if you are looking for something within walking distance of Hakone-Yumoto, this place is certainly not. You'll need to take the bus/train to get around. There isn't much to do within the ryokan's vincinity. If you are thinking of staying for a couple of nights, definitely get a transportation pass. See this for more details: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_008.html

Re: What about Hakone-Ginyu?

by merbel

Yes, it looks like we take the Hakone Mountain train 35 minutes to a stop that is a short walk from the ryokan. Not sure how often the mountain train runs.

Re: What about Hakone-Ginyu?

by mim95

The ryokan is a few stops from Haokne-Yumoto station. If you have a JR pass, you can buy the Hakone transporation pass at Odawara station. And they will give you a train/bus schedule there. Carry it with you whenever you head out, as you'll need to know when the train/bus arrives, especially you don't want to miss the last one. Taxi is very expensive.

There is nothing much to do at night, other than enjoying the hot springs or other activities provided by the ryokan.

Enough Time?

by traceylee-ann

Hi Everyone, I am wondering if All of the below things can be done in one day?
* Tsukiji fish market
* Hama Detached palace garden
* Sumida river cruise
* Asakusa
* Ueno
We are travelling with children (10 and 1 years old)
Thanks.

RE: Enough Time?

by eenelfje

yes because for the fishmarket you will have to get up so early that you have enough time to explore Tokyo for the rest of the day, although your kids will be tired !

RE: Enough Time?

by Meg_nanako

yes...shouldn't be a problem as one does get started at the Tsukiji very early in the morning. Note that there are days that they are not operating.
Try to get a breakfast meal at one of the small restaurants. The sashimi is
so fresh and tasty...

RE: Enough Time?

by sagamigal

You'll have to get to Tsukiji around 3-4AM to see the auction action...Tokyo is a very convenient city to travel around so YES you can take the HIBIYA sen (Line) to Ueno and shop around Ameyoko, visit the zoo or the museum. Or you can take the Toei Oedo line to Tsukijishijo station. From Ueno, take the GINZA line to Asakusa. For a more authentic ***amachi (Old Tokyo) feel, try taking the Arakawa Tram from Minowa station on the HIBIYA line. It's only 160 yen for the whole trip (about an hour). The other end will take you near Waseda university. I love taking that line when I want that old feeling.
Saying all this, I don't think you can do all this in a day with children! Or perhaps go to Tsukiji in the morning then have a nap and do the rest later! Hope this helps!!

RE: RE: Enough Time?

by sagamigal

That's "S h i t a machi", literally 'downtown' but actually refers to the oldest parts of Tokyo.

RE: RE: Enough Time?

by mim95

Yes you can do it all in one day, BUT you'll be very tired. Having breakfast at the fish market was a great experience, but be prepared for a long line up. I was in line for nearly an hour before being able to get a seat! But I got there pretty late, at 10am.

Hotel Taiyo, Osaka

by ckoyen

Hi guys!!

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Taiyo in Osaka before? I would like to ask about :

1) For their restrooms (which I assume is toilet), does it have a door to close?
2) For the use of private shower rooms over at the other hotel, does each shower room there have a door?
3) How is Hotel Taiyo, overall?

thanks!

ckoyen.

Re: Hotel Taiyo, Osaka

by LLgirl

ckoyen,
As I haven't been to this area recently, things may have changed. But I don't recommend staying in this area (south part of Shin Imamiya station) for female travelers. This area has long been known for many homeless people...

Re: Hotel Taiyo, Osaka

by ckoyen

Hi LLgirl!

Thank you for all the help you had given me! :)

The hotel is situated at a place known for homeless people..hmm..my friends and I are only planning to stay at Osaka for one night, and we dont really want to spend too much money on this..will there be any other good and budgeted hostels that you can recommend us?

thanks!

ckoyen.

Try this site if you haven't. Shinsaibashi or Namba (=Nanba) is very convenient as it's close to shopping/dining area.
