I love this place!Yatai Kaikan (Festival Floats Exhibition Hall)
If you cannot be in Takayama at the time of the Spring and Autumn festivals you still can see four of the eleven floats used in the festival procession. The floats are changed every few months so all eleven floats are on display for a few months. This means you have to visit more times in a year......
Each float is different in style and decoration, reflecting the tradition of the district in Takayama to which it belongs.
All this is explained by guides. But if you don´t speak japanese their is a recording in english for you to listen to. Immediately when we entered someone came up to us with a card in english asking us if we would like to take the taperecorder to guide us. We did, and it was full of info about the festival and the floats. Just return the taperecorder at the end. This service is free.
Entrance fee was 820 Yen in april 2003, with this ticket you can also visit the Sakurayama Nikko Kan next to the Yatai Kaikan. More on this in our next tip.
