Perfect Takayama getaway

The Rickshaw Inn is in the heart of Takayama. It is run by a very friendly staff. One of the ladies that works there speaks outstanding English. The inn is perfect for a weekend trip, or a 2 night stay in Takayama. Breakfast is not usually included, but it is very cheap. You can buy a breakfast ticket for 500 yen when you get there. The Inn offers both Japanese and Western style rooms, with the option of having a private bathroom or not. I went with the public bath option, and it was fine. Each room gives you a yukata, traditional Japanese robe, and slippers, that you can wear to the bathroom. It is kept impeccably clean. I stayed in a single Western room (Japanese were all full) and it was great. There was no shower, but it had a toilet and a sink. It was very cozy. The staff is very helpful and knowldgeable about local happenings and how to get around.
I highly recommend the Rickshaw Inn to people traveling to Takayama. The service was great, it was very well-kept, clean, and had a very nice atmosphere. It is in the heart of the town, so getting around to places is extremely easy. The main street in Takayama is only a minute's walk away, yet the Inn is in a tucked away, quiet sidestreet. Also, once you cross the main street, there is a street full of declicious local restaurants. You have everything you need.

Centrally Located Inn

I didn't stay here, (tried but it was already booked up) but passed by and it is recommended by several guidebooks. It is close to all the tourist sights in the town proper and only a couple minute's walk from the train station.
There are Western as well as Japanese style rooms, including a family suite which accommodates up to 5 people.

Snuggled up in Rickshaw Inn

I love Rickshaw Inn. It was the best accommodation we had in our entire Japan trip. The rooms are large and comfy in Japanese tatami mat style but they provide you with lovely warm comforters. There is a separate sitting area segregated using a sliding Japanese screen.

The bathroom is one of the biggest with a separate shower, toilet and basin compartment, all modern and absolutely clean.

There is a large living room just beyond the corridor leading to the rooms with sofas, armchairs and reading materials. A perfect place to unwind, chit chat and read. A small kitchen with cooking facilities and refrigerator is provided. We used it to keep milk and cook noodles for breakfast.

You can also do laundry using coin-operated machines and this is set in the basement which can be quite chilly.

And if you're in a mood for shopping, just pop over next door Tsurezure (Oriental gift shop) which sells home decor items, lovely art pieces and unique souvenirs. I bought a lovely silk yukata and tenugui (Japanese woodblock prints on cloth)

Be sure to come with a backpack as these B&B always feature a lot of stairs!

All this for US$99 per night in a double room.

Good, clean and comfortable

The Rickshaw Inn is located just outside of the tourist area. It has several different rooms. We stayed in a double room with our own bathroom. We had a sitting room, and a bedroom. Which is nice because you can leave the beds on the ground and have to put them away in the closet if you want to sit a while at the table.

There is no restaurant in the Rickshaw Inn but you can order breakfast for 550 Yen.
All the staff speak english.
