Travel Tips for Hiroshima

by kiwigal_1

Miyajima is an island located just offshore from Hiroshima. It is reached by ferries which run at regular intervals throughout the day.

I made a day trip to this beautiful island which offers spectacular views of the bay surrounding Hiroshima city.

On the island there are deer walking around and a few famous temples you must visit. The name Miyajima actually means temple island and there is a torii (temple gate) built in 1875 which stands in the waters near the main shrine; Itsukushima Shrine. There are many tourists and tour groups around the flat area where the main temple is but it is possible to 'get away' a little. You can climb up the mountain on the island (I chose to take a gondola ride instead!!) to the top where there are great views. I would recommend walking down though as there are some interesting things to see along the way. The path down is all steps which can be a little rough on the knees though!
Be careful at the bottom because the path is slippery as we found out!!

For a great website on Miyajima and the shrine and to see a map of the area please click this link: Miyajima

Ferry traffic

There are some interesting islands around Hiroshima and you can get there by ferry. There are departures from City Pier, Prefectural Pier or a bit further to the west of town from Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal (from here to Miyajima it takes 10 minutes only).

Hiroshima castle

by salisbury3933

Unfortunately I don't have any photos on hand, but Hiroshima castle which was reconstructed in 1958 is located rather close to the peace park, about a ten minute stroll at most. If you're at the peace park, it's worth a look.

The shrine was first built in 593, then rebuilt in 1168 on the same scale as it is today. It's pier-like construction is a result of the island's holy staturs: commoners were not allowed to set foot on the island and had to approach the shrine by boat, entering through the torii in the bay.
The shrine consists mainly of red pillars, which is impressive, but most of the time it is not surrounded by water but by mud. Only the very lucky ones experience the shrine and torii "really floating".
Nevertheless, it was designated as a Unesco World Heritage site in 1996.

Power of life

"The famous dome "Genbaku domu""

How could someone visit Hiroshima without thinking to the bomb ? And I reached the city from Nagasaki... So, my first reaction was "I need some life before facing the museum". So I visited MiyaJima. The next day, I did go to the Museum, where I was a bit ashame, being the only westerner or so. Quite interestingly the japanese started smiling at me, as to say : "don't feel guilty" On the other hand, I disagree with what you can read in many travel guide : they do write "Nanking massacre" and talk about what leaded to the WWII in Asia.
