Is it worth a winter visit?

by saw50st8

I am coming to Japan in about a week. We are flying into Osaka and out of Narita. We do not have that much time (about 9 days), but I would love to see Hiroshima. Is it worth it to make the day trip to Hiroshima? I would take the first possible train there and the last one back.

How long does the train take approximately?
Can I see Mijama in the winter? Is it worht it?

I would probably go to Mijama first and then go to the Peace Park afterwards.
Let me know what you think!

Depend on your interst, but Miyajima and sightseeing on Hiroshima city will be good itinerary for day excursion.
In my memory Miyajima is a mystic and solemon place even for me, Japanese but eating out in Miyajima islet was being with terrible price(20 years ago).
Anyway don't forget you try Okonomiyaki if you go to Hiroshima. You can get it on restaurant mall in Hiroshima Station.

A day trip to Hiroshima would be a long one, but if you leave early enough in the morning you could do what you want to do in a day. Might be a better idea to shell out for accommodation in Hiroshima.

It would only be around 90 minutes from Osaka, but around 4 hours from Tokyo by train.

Travel Tips for Hiroshima

by Pavlik_NL

Hiroshima is in exteriour a rather different town then others in Japan. Obviously because it has been totally destroyed and therefor the city now has a new look. Wide avenues, large officeblocks in a chessboard-shape. Almost an American town which makes it even strange to know that the bomb came from them.

Sadako Sasaki-memorial (shed a tear)

by Pavlik_NL

Akiko (for me, though the official name of the girl is "Sadako Sasaki") memorial. This little girl that got years after the atomic blast leukemia because of the radiation. She firmly believed that she would be cured if she folded a thousand origami cranes (birds) and finished almost 900 ... when she died. Since then, at the memorial schoolchildren bring strings of thousands and thousands of origami-birds. Try not to shed a tear if you realise the wish for worldpeace that is haunting through the city that has seen the worst in worldwar.

Visit Miyajima, a small isle with a strong religic inflluence.
It's is one of the most famous places of Japan. The Itsukushima-shrine a lot of other temples and shrines and ofcourse the O-torii (Grand Gate). And at the top of the hill a monkey-park.

"Hiroshima"

I visited Hiroshima once for sightseeing only, and once for the Japanese language proficiency test with some sightseeing thrown in. There's plenty to do, but the shadow of history is what makes Hiroshima most interesting.
