Renowned as one of the 'three most beautiful' scenic spots in Japan, Miyajima Island is easily accessible from Hiroshima and well worth visiting. As they approach the island by ferry, visitors are greeted by the famous red Trii gate standing in the water. On shore, there awaits a multitude of traditional and modern delights, ranging from quiet beaches on the other side of the island, where the deer are still wild, to the more heavily populated shrines, temples, aquarium, folklore museum, treasure house, 5 story pagota and thousand mat hall. The island contains a nature preserve of over 3,000 plants maintained by the botanical research department of Hiroshima University. At the same time, it boasts of having the biggest summer fireworks festival in Western japan and also presents a number of ancient cultural traditions such as Bugaku (sacred shrine music and dancing), Jin No (sacred No drama) and torch, Oyster and other colorful traditional festivals.
Peace Memorial Park
by Ines28
This is understandably the first place most visitors will go to. It contains the A-Bomb Dome, the Children's Peace Monument and the Peace Memorial Museum.
The park is perfectly maintained, but of course also very depressing.
From the place where this picture is taken you can see the Flame of Peace, which will not be extinguished until the last nuclear weapon is destroyed, and the A-Bomb Dome. Beneath the arch lies a vault containing the names of the victims of the bomb.
Monument to the Mobilized Students
by vic&michael
"The Monument to the Mobilized Students remembers nearly 7000 Hiroshima school students who were killed in the atomic bombing. They were 'mobilised' to demolish wooden buildings, to produce food, and to work in factories for the war effort.
The statue represents the Goddess of Peace with eight doves. Thousands of paper cranes are left here by visitors seeking a world in which children can live without fear of nuclear weapons"

Setoda town a small island in the Seto Inland Sea.
Among others it has an original temple which is brightly coloured and has a 'tunnel of hell!', an art museum dedicated to Ikuo Hirayama, a famous artist who grew up in Setoda, a cafe situated amongst a medditeranian style bunch of sculptured rocks with a lovely view of the island and a beach called sunset beach where this photo was taken.
Don't miss it!
Sharrie's Hiroshima Heat
by Sharrie
HIROSHIMA! Oh boy, it was hot! For the 2 days I was in Hiroshima, I experienced one of the hottest temperature in my life. Hot, humid, not very pleasant ... but somehow I caught a tiny glimpse of what it was like then (though incomparable to THE disaster). It must have been hellish!!! For those who were too young to know what I am referring to, it's the first atomic bomb in the world that was dropped in this city during WWII (at 8.15 on Aug. 6, 1945). That was then.
Now, the city is bustling with hope & renewals. It's been known as peace city & tourists come from all over the world to visit its miraculous reconstruction. When elsewhere in the world others are still fighting for territorial rights & whatever disputes that's been ongoing, Hiroshima should serve as a reminder that history must never repeats itself. For this reason alone, I hope the world & leaders will always remember Hiroshima!
