Travel Tips for Hiroshima

The Kojin Market near...

by ErnieGal

The Kojin Market near Hiroshima Station is another one of those character-filled places where one can see the real Japan. Wondering its narrow, crowded rows, you can shop for the freshest fish, fruit and vegetables in Hiroshima.
The vendors are boisterous and friendly and you can move freely among the booths searching for odd and interesting wares. Because its merchants don't utilize fancy packaging, most things are cheaper as compared to the supermarkets.

Okonomiyaki Mura (Okonomiyaki Village), Hiroshima
It is a building, with several floors of nothing but Okonomiyaki shops. You sit at the grill and the staff make it for you, while you relax with a beer or Uron tea. Okonomiyaki. What is it? An egg and flour, veggie, fish, meat mix. Kind of like a mega-omelette!! I LOVE okonomiyaki! To get a good start with okonomiyaki, order 'mix-okonimiyaki'. Hiroshima okonomiyaki is famous.

Childrens Peace Monument

by WStat

The Children's Peace Monument is a statue dedicated to the memory of the children who died as a result of the bombing. The statue is of a girl with outstretched arms with a folded paper crane rising above her. The statue is based on the true story of Sadako Sasaki , a young girl who died from radiation from the bomb. She believed that if she folded 1,000 paper cranes she would be cured. To this day, children from around the world fold cranes and send them to Hiroshima where they are placed near the statue. The statue has a continuously replenished collection of folded cranes nearby, lighting up the sad mood of the place by their fresh and happy colors.

SHUKKEIEN.

by Sharrie

SHUKKEIEN (literally 'shrink-scenery garden' was constructed in 1620 but rebuilt in 1945 after the bombing. Originally built by Ueda Soko, a famous master of tea ceremony, as the garden of Nagaakira's villa.

The garden was said to be modeled after the Xihu (West Lake) in Hangzhou, China.

Hiroshima

by renuschka

At 8:15 on the morning of August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb used against humankind exploded about 580 meters above Shima Hospital in Saiku-machi, utterly destroing all people and property below it. Among the burned ruins stood the skeletal remains of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall ( now the A-bomb Dome), a grim reminder of what had been.
