Travel Tips for Hiroshima

You will see paper cranes in...

by j-san

You will see paper cranes in huge bundles hanging all around the various peace monuments. There is a long story to this about a girl dying from the effects of the radiation after the bomb was dropped and while she was in hospital she folded paper cranes. Believing that when she'd made 1000 she would be well. She died just before reaching that figure, so school children who visit Hiroshima lay paper cranes they have made in memory of her and others who died as a result of the bombing. Cranes are a symbol of long life. While we were taking these pictures, 3 fresh (as in confident as hell!) teenage school girls came upto us with notebooks in hand - wanting us to sign them. Why? It was an English exercise given to them by their teacher! They were to hunt down tourists around the Peace Park, practice a set of sentences and as proof obtain an autograph! (no guessing our reaction...)

Peace Park

by SueWarwick

Needless to say, this is the main attraction in Hiroshima.
I took a look around the park including the flame of peace which will remain lit until the last nuclear weapon is disposed of. It has burnt continuously since it was lit in 1964.
Standing by the cenotaph arch you can look through and see the flame of peace and on to the A Bomb Dome, with the water feature running through the centre a beautiful design
Perhaps the most moving monument of the park is for Sadako Sasaki who contracted leukemia ten years after the bombing (when she was just 12 years old). Her classmates wanted to build a monument from all the children who died in the bombing. The figure holds a paper crane. A legend says that if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes they would soon recover. After hearing the story, Sadako decided to start folding cranes but sadly she died after folding 644 cranes. A paper crane folding club was formed in her honour and students from over 3,000 schools helped raise money.
Cranes are still placed by the monument.

Memorial Tower To the Mobilized Students.

by Travel2write

In Hiroshima, 8,387 students were mobilized to work and help in the war effort. Many of these students helped with the removal of many wooden houses in order to prevent fires from destroying large parts of the city. Of these students, 6,097 of them were killed by the atomic bomb. Many paper folded cranes can be seen at this memorial also. In Japan, the paper crane has become a symbol of peace.

Peace Park and Peace Museum.

by GenkiMac

The ability of the museum to make you forget about who was right and who was wrong and instead think about what is right for the future. It's ability to make you believe that world peace may be possible in a world where it doesn't seem to be a priority for so many.

HIROSHIMA!!

by heywinks

this city is amazing! my friend and i came to visit the peace memorial museum and atomic bomb dome. i know that it has been more than half a century since the atomic bomb dropped, but if the a-bomb dome was not there as a reminder to all people i would not even had known that there was such a devastation that occured here.
