Travel Tips for Hiroshima

Christmas Time lights along the parkway

by KevinMichael

This was a bonus we weren't planning on. The key to it had been the location of our hotel along the parkway. We stayed there on December 27 and were surprised to find it illuminated all along the parkway. It was stupendous. It was obvious with people out and about that many others were enjoying this Christmas light display as well.

There were lights along Hiroshima Peace park, but they weren't as decorative as the ones
lining the hotel areas of the parkway.

Hiroshima is an important port with ferry connections to other cities and even to South Korea (where we came from). We also took the ferry to Matsuyama on Shikoku which costs Y 2600 and takes 2 3/4 hours. There are 10 ferries daily, and additional 10 fast ferries (1 1/4 hours) costing Y5800.
This is an easy and comfortable way to travel, and it's inexpensive if you have the time to take the slower services.

Gembaku Domu

One of the most famous sites is the Atomic Bomb (A Bomb) dome
The dome is next to the Aioi River at the end of the peace park and is became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The building was originally the Industrial Promotion Hall and is one of the few buildings left standing within a mile radius of the explosion.
Infact, the explosion was almost directly above the building and now remains in the same state it was in immediatly after the bombing (give or take a few bits of metal to stop it collapsing)
It is also worth seeing the domb lit up at night

Most plazas, shops, department stores are easily found from the HONDORI. It's covered over which is handy in summer and winter in Japan and it is busy which gives it a city atmosphere (Hiroshima is pretty small so you don't often feel that- if you like cities then this is good!) . Other than the Hondori for shopping try Sogo (expensive) but with a good bookshop and GAP and next door Parcela with a nice roof top cafe and Virgin records and Tokyo Hands (department store).

Genbaku-Dome(Atomic Bomb Memorial Tower) is one of the UNESCO's World Heritage.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki are only two places in the world, which experienced the atomic bomb...

They have recoverd already, but we have to remember the war...
Thie dome is the only one building that survived the atomic bomb.
