Tokyo-Sapporo. Flight/JR pass

by Isenzy

This is our group's tentative plan:

13-16 dec: Tokyo
17-21 dec: Hokkaido
22 dec: Tokyo Narita back to Singapore

Which is more economical?
1) By flight from Tokyo to Sapporo and back (Air Do 10,000 yen 1-way ticket) and travelling ard Hokkaido by buying daily train/bus tickets.

2) Buy a 7-days JR pass and activate from 16-21 dec. That means we will be travelling by daytime trains. We don't really mind spending 2 days on travelling. However, are there any extra costs that are not covered by the JR pass (eg. limited express train)

I require some advice urgently. Pls help. Thank you very much.

You have to work out the costs for the following options which may suit your budget.
a. Depending on the air carrier u r flying, if possible buy an open jaw ticket - arrive at Narita and depart from Sapporo.

b. Referring to your alternative 1 & 2, you have to weight cost benefits i.e. flying one way or take JR trains for both ways. This depends on your budget. However, should you choose JR pass, you may use it for all trains - Shinkansen + limited express train at no extra costs. You can even travel around Hokkaido by using the JR pass.

Happy travelling.

Hi Sambawalk,

thanks so much for replying. We are a gp pf students travelling to Japan on a tight budget. We are either flying both ways (Tokyo-Sapporo and back) or by JR trains both ways.

We are concerned with additional airport costs/aviation insurance charge and consumption tax which may not be reflected in the air fare (20,000 yen to and fro). Plus the travelling in Hokkaido (Maybe in Sapporo and Asahikawa), will it amt to ard 28,000 yen?

We are thinking that if we buy the JR pass, it will cover 1 day transport in Tokyo, all transport costs from Tokyo to Hokkaido, travelling in Hokkaido and from Sapporo back to Tokyo on the 21st dec. Presuming that there are no extra berth charges that pops up on us. Seems like JR pass will suit us better?

The bottom line is that JR pass is a subsidy to foreign visitors. So if you can afford the time, travelling by JR pass is the best way to go around. You can also be able to explore more cities in Hokkaido that we have yet to plan. I remembered the pass allow you to travel to Nikko, the waterfall and the lake which is around 2 hours from Tokyo.

Thank you so much for the advice. Guess the gp have to discuss and arrive at a decision fast.

Have a nice week ahead Sambawalk. =)

Hokkaido is a deceptively large island, and the cost of traveling around it is not trivial. Sapporo-Asahikawa by Express Lilac costs 9,360 yen R/T so cost-wise air fare + Sapporo-Asahikawa R/T by train (plus airport transfers) would exceed that of using a JR pass (which includes express surcharges).

My only concern with your itinerary is that your time in Japan is limited, and with two days traveling, it would leave only six days at destinations. Any reason you would not use the sleeper train Hokutosei for Tokyo - Sapporo?

Hi.

Juz visited Hokkaido in Janurary 2004. We bought a JAL ski package and flew in from Haneda Airport to Shin Chitose Airport.

Cost of 7-day JR pass is yen 28,300
Cost of 2-day flight via Air-Do is yen 20,000+

Depend on how many places you are planning to stop over in Hokkaido, JR pass may save on transport but need more time travelling to/fro Tokyo.

Check out my travelogue on my Hokkaido trip. You can email me for more info - have some maps on hand.

Regards,
Doreen

Travel Tips for Sapporo

Sapporo Seafood Market

by akikonomu

Pales in comparison to Hakodate's which is more pedestrian friendly. Mainly a street of seafood vendors and restaurants. Prices are steeper than Hakodate - suggest you give it a miss if you have visited the one in Hakodate.
