To Hokkaido in Jan
by Jannoo
Hi everyone,
What is the weather like in Hokkado during Jan? I am planning to visit Hokkaido during Chinese New Year that will be 10th Jan next year.
Will majority shops or vacation spot close during this season?
Thanks

Have been there twice in first weekend of February for Yuki Matsuri. Temperatures ranged from about 17 during night to just above freezing during the day. I bundled up and got by just fine (there was no wind). This city has a problem in winter ... it gets above freezing almost every day and freezes in the afternoon and -- IT'S THE SLIPPERIEST PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN! They rent spiked shoes at the airport. At one intersection I almost fell three times while a taxi patiently waited for me. I thought I was going to have to crawl across that street! GOOD LUCK! (I may go back this winter if I don't go in October.) My hotel had windows that opened, so I stored my beer out on window sill and slept in a very comfortable German-like "fedderbett" and the staff there thought it was pretty strange for someone from Hawaii!
HAVE GREAT FUN!

In Sapporo the average temp. is minus 4 degrees during the day. If you can, you should really try to go during their snow festival in early February, it's awesome!! And since you are going in the winter, Hokkaido also has lots of great places to ski or snowboard that you should look into. I went to Kiroro and had a great time this last winter.

Everything should be open, it's the modern new year during which many places are closed (12/31 - 1/4).
Travel Tips for Sapporo
Odori Park and TV Tower
by sunnywong
Odori Park the broad median of Odori ("large street") in the center of Sapporo, separating the city into North and South. The park stretches over twelve blocks and offers pleasant green space during the warmer months, while staging the annual Sapporo Snow Festival in February.
At the eastern end of Odori Park stands the TV Tower with an observation deck that offers nice views of Odori Park and the city of Sapporo.
