In down-town areas these can be your only option. They are mostly cheerless, with rooms not much larger than the bed, but even in downtown Tokyo you can get an affordable rate. Look for them near the train station in many cities Prices are about ..6,000-8,000 PER PERSON, maybe breakfast is served but not always

The Nara Plaza Hotel is pretty close to the big Buddha which is the primary attraction in Nara. It isn't within walkign distance, but not too bad by car. The hotel is really affordable, with a double room costing Y5000 ($45) if you arrive late. Alternatively you can pay Y2000 ($18) just to use the extensive public baths on the presence then sleep in the common area on Lazyboy chairs that tilt far enough back that you can sleep. With an infant, we opted for the hotel room, but the common areas looked more than comfortable enough. Overall I would rate the rooms as basic 3 star accomodations, but with the baths, you're in for a special treat.
Without a doubt the best feature here is the public baths. For those of you who aren't familiar with the public baths, these are much more extensive than what our grandparents used to get when they paid a nickle for a towel and a shower. The public baths in Japan are quite nearly spas in their own right, often with attached restaurants and bars, extensive tubs of varying kinds and temperatures of water, massage to purchase and more. This one had an outdoor pool which had three ceiling nozzles, about four meters high which let a thick rope of clear hot water drop to the surface. When you put your clavicle or back under the stream it was like a pounding massage. Heaven. A trip to the baths gets you laundered pajamas, all the soaps, a toothbrush and toothpaste, hair driers etc. Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: 600-1 Kobata-cho Tenri 632-0084Phone: 81-742-26-3300

My very own pink dorm room at The White House by Pixiekatten This is a women only guesthouse. It's run by an older lady and the rules are strict, for example curfew is at 9pm. But it didnt matter. I had a wonderful stay here! I booked a single room the day before and when I arrived the owner thought my backpack was too big and was taking up too much space in the small room so she let me have a 6 bed dorm room all to myself instead. When I was heading out for a stroll around Kamakura it was raining and I was going to buy an umbrella at a 100 yen shop around the corner. But the sweet lady wouldnt hear of it and searched her house until she found a rain coat with matching trousers for me to put on. She was extremely nice and helpful and remineded me of my Grannie! Price is 4,800yen which includes breakfast, amazing service and kindness straight from the heart!! At first glance Uno House doesnt feel right. Smoky, run down and not the cleanest place I stayed at. But then you remember you just want a roof over your head. A shower. And a bed. And its all there. Plus its quiet. Easy to find. 10 minutes walk to city centre. And its cheap. Hey, suddenly Uno House feels just fine! Booked 2 nights, stayed 4. So it aint that bad!

The Holiday Inn Kanazawa by Paul2001 The Holiday Inn Kanazawa was possibly the best value for my money hotel I stayed in while touring Japan. Essentially a business hotel, I paid about $60.00CDN when I stayed here back in 1990. I think that a similar room today will now set you back about $90.00US. The hotel is located within a short walk of the train station. It is also located within walking distance of the key attraction located around Kanazawa.
The rooms here are quite large for a Japanese hotel. There is a decent bar and two good restaurants. The rooms have cable TV. I watched "Ben-her" in Japanese here. Most camp sites are simple affairs. They usually have just a clear, flat area for erecting tents, and a small reception, with toilets, washing and cooking facilities. Many don't even have showers. What's more, almost all are only open in summer, or from April to November in popular areas. Rates are cheap for simply putting up your tent, but renting a bungalow or log cabin can be expensive. Be careful with older maps, many smaller camp sites have closed in recent years. The downside is that the water supply and all electricity will invariably be turned off. The plus side: tranquillity

by AndreasK Ok, this is just an alternative for those traveling in Japan on a budget: Love Hotels. In Japanese houses with paper-thin walls there is a lack of privacy. The number of people living with their parents before and even after marriage is very high. The purpose of a Love Hotel is to give couples the possibility to spend some undisturbed time together. It is easy to recognize these hotels because they stand out as a refreshingly off-the-wall escape from Japanese conformity. A stay overnight still costs about $80 per room, this is less expensive than average accommodation in Japanese cities. On weekends, the prices may be much higher. The reception at a love hotel is very anonymous. The guests pay at a little window where the receptionist behind cannot be seen. Love hotels are a good way to stretch your travelling dollar. Most hotels in Japan charge on a per person basis, but in a love hotel you pay a flat fee for the room; however, you can't usually check in until 10 pm. Theme: Other

by bkathryn Then it was back to our hotel, the Mita Miyako Hotel, in time for another reception with more speeches and more lovely munchies and more beer. I took a picture of my cute little hotel room - what more do you really need, after all? Theme: HotelComparison: about averageAddress: Mita Miyako Hotel, TokyoPhone: 03 (3454) 3111

front of the hotel by jeners Nice place , clean, very nice people ,english speaking . They will let u know where the cheap eats are, places of interest and the best way of getting there. Fairly easy to get to the hotel by subway from the airport.
Rooms are very clean and cozy. Have internet for a small charge. A coffee shop downstairs, coffee is expensive all over Japan. Free breakfast. Bar open 24 hrs. The Kimono's on the bed where a nice touch.
