Travel Tips for Himeji

CHERRY BLOSSOMS

by kiwigal_1

Inside the castle grounds are many cherry trees. When we toured Himeji castle the blossoms were just starting to show. This picture is one of my personal favourites.

Cherry blossom

by yumyum

Although I visited in autumn I was amazed to see a cherry tree trying to blossom. Cherry blossom time in Japan is extremely popular and if you get the chance you should visit during that time. On TV you will not only see the weather forecast but also the cherry blossom forecast, so that you know exactly where to travel to see them. Cherry blossom time is party time in Japan and you see families everywhere sitting on tarpaulins and picnic.

Very, very off the beaten path

by Namazu

Mt Seppiko if just north of Himeji proper. It's been a couple years since I hiked there, but I think...

You can catch a bus from the station just north west of the JR Himeji station (Shinki Bus?). There's only one morning bus, at about 7:00. You should be able to ask at the station. The bus will take you to the base of the mountain, Seppiko was first described to me as a "relaxing nature walk" when in reality it is a hard-core hike... don't be fooled by the grandmas, giggling as they race ahead of you. If you get down fast enough you will have time to follow the other hikers to the onsen to relax before the only evening bus back to Himeji comes.

PERUVIAN/BRAZILIAN RESTAURANT

by heywinks

RESTAURANTE TOGETHER is located in Shirahamanomiya (Sanyo train line from Himeji-6 stations from Himeji). The food is DELICIOUS! It`s a small restaurant owned by a Japanese woman who has travelled to Peru & Brazil. She seems to know alot about the cuisine, constantly explaining to us what we were eating. We ordered a few dishes including a seafood soup, a beef dish w/ a tomato & milk base, a chicken & onion dish with a tomato base, & salad that came with palm tree meat! Everything was really good & I recommend all to go there! The prices are good & the portions larger than regular Japanese size.
(Walk out of the South exit, turn left, walk to the first set of lights & you`ll see a mini plaza on the corner. TOGETHER is there). Sundays:12-9pm. Mon-Sat:10am-2pm, 5pm-9pm. Menu in Japanese & Spanish.

Himeji-Jo, an awesome castle

by matlocksson

This is an amazing castle that was built in the 16th century. Also known as the white egret castle, this fortress offers many levels to explore as well as moats and gardens. You can even see the holes in the wall designed to allow defenders of the castle to pour boiling oil on any attackers ! Just a short walk from the train station, this is a beautiful, breathtaking structure. Easily done in a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka and ideal for someone with a Japan rail pass.
