Fabrics & 2nd Hand Stuff

by amobogio

I am in Kobe for work right now, staying at the New Otani, & I would like some shopping advice.
I love 2nd hand stores and my wife is a quilter. Some folks have advised us to try to find 2nd hand kimono and obi for recycling into quilts and also for wear. So can you help me with this. I have no Japanese, but I do have my trusty phrasebook. I've been travelling on the JR trains so far and I'm ok with those, and I'm willing to explore.
Can you all help?

Ps. I'm from Ontario Canada
Pps. Discount running shoe store; Converse, Nike etc. would also be nice to know about

RE: Fabrics & 2nd Hand Stuff

I think the best place to find 2nd hand fabrics are at flea markets. There are so many flea markets in the Kobe area during the summertime. Check listings in Kansai Time Out. The flea markets are usually on the weekends at Kobe Port.
I got alot of my fabrics and kimonos from flea markets. Prices vary of course but you can get some really great deals. I got kimonos in beautiful fabrics for 200 yen once! That's not a typo!
You might also want to try the department store kimono sections. They do have some used kimonos for sale for 2000-5000yen, and cheap obis for 1000yen. I lived in Himeji and the Himeji dept stores would sell used kimonos and obis. Also the ties for the obis.
The flea markets in Kyoto always have used kimonos and obis but I found their prices to be higher, even when bargaining.
Good luck!

Shoe shops

by heywinks

For discount sports shoe wear, you may want to go to the outlets. Try the outlets at Tarumi (between Kobe and Akashi on the JR or Hankyu lines).
There are many shoe stores in Kobe, which is a city known for its shoes! Have you been to the shops on the Sannomiya and Motomachi shopping streets? How about underneath JR in that narrow shopping alley where all the young ppl frequent??

Kobe, A Beautiful Port City

by MINOSUKE

"Kobe Port and the Rokko Mountains"

Kobe is the capital city of Hyogo Prefecture. From Osaka, we can get to Kobe in about 30 minutes.
The city is on the inland sea, Setonaikai. The downtown lies along the coast. Behind, there are Rokko Mountains. We can walk down from the foot of the mountain to the sea in less than 1 hour, first we go down steep slopes and when we get near the sea the road becomes almost flat.
Kobe Port was opened in the Meiji Era along with Yokohama and Nagasaki and many people came to live in Kobe from abroad. So there is international atmosphere in Kobe.
There used to be a lot of beautiful buildings built in the Meiji and Taisho Era, but many of them were destroyed in the 1995 earthquake. After the quake, those buildings were rebuilt and the streets were replanned. But I do not think the charm of the city has decreased at all. I like visiting the city. I like to go to restaurants in Kobe. I like to go shopping there. And I like to walk around in the city.

"Luminarie, Lights Console the Souls of the Dead"

In the middle of December every year, the downtown streets in Kobe are decorated with uncountable number of lights. This event, Luminarie, began in 1996, the year after the terrible earthquake that took place in the area around Kobe in January, 1995. More than 6,000 died in the earthquake. This event began in order to console the souls of the victims in the quake. During the period of this event, many people come to Kobe to pray for the dead.

"Place to Enjoy International Food"

In Kobe, we can enjoy international cuisine.
Especially Chinese food we can eat in Kobe is SO delicious, so is Indian food.
There are many Chinese people living in Kobe and there is China Town near Motomachi. A lot of tourists come visit there.
