I am arranging a 2-day package trip through JTB Sunrise agency and trying to decide between the Hakone Hotel Kowakien ($263) and Yumoto Fujiya Hotel ($408). The latter is more expensive since dinner and breakfast is included.
Both hotels offer onsen, but I am not sure which one to stay at. Your comments and guidance would be much appreciated. Food, location, quality are all considerations.
If you like shopping, Fujiya Hotel's location is perfect, as it is in the Yumoto area, the terminal train station coming from Tokyo. There is a shopping street in front of the station.
Kowakien is higher up on the mountain, and not too far away is the onsen amusement park with all kinds of weird pools (green tea, wine...etc). There is a free shuttle bus service that between the amuseument park and Kowakien Hotel if you don't like to walk. There is pretty much nothing to do nearby. You have to take a bus to sightsee. No dinner included? Keep in mind that shops and restaurants close pretty early, and there's nothing to do at night, except going to the hot spring.
thanks so much. on another note, would you recommend the outlets in Hakone at all?
Outlets? I guess you are referring to the one closer to Mt Fuji? I haven't been there but my friend told me she prefers another one taht is closer to Tokyo (sorry I can't remember the exact location).
I should clarify that the shops near Yumoto station sells souvenir related stuffs.
