Need a hotel recommendation

by timewaster

i cam coming into Kyoto from Tokyo via the bullet train, so i am thinking of picking a hotel near kyoto station. for example, this one

http://www.agoda.com/asia/japan/kyoto/apa_hotel_kyoto_ekimae.html#info

How far away (i.e. how many minutes) by the metro would i need to travel to the tourist sites?

Are there lots of restaurants in that area?

also, can i use the SUICA card in the kyoto metro?

I stayed at the APA Ekimae last month and it was small but nice. The staff are super nice! There is a 'Seattle's Best Coffee' in the tiny lobby, and you are verrry close to all methods of transit. The totally-awesome Kyoto Yodobashi department store is 1/2 a block away (you gotta see it to believe it!) and there is a mcd's there too. Yes, some great restaurants in the area. The room was basic and small, but suited my needs (I like cheap and just need a bed, desk, and bathroom to keep me happy!). Don't know about the Suica card--never used it myself just hopped buses and got around to all the tourist sites that way. Enjoy!

No, Kyoto transit (train and bus) are isolated from the Suica system. They use a card that is exactly the same but local to Kyoto. Can't recall the name as I've only bought 1 day passes in Kyoto.

Kyoto Station area is pretty good. I like it. It's good as you can easily hop onto a bus that takes you everywhere. I'd recommend the bus over the metro.

As for SUICA, as mentioned, it won't work in Kyoto. It only works in Tokyo and almost all JR lines. Buy the one day bus pass and use it to get everywhere. The tourist help desks are amazingly helpful.
