Reasonably priced ryokan in kyoto
by mexxgal
Hi, I'll be going Kyoto with my 20mth toddler & hubby in mid May. Have booked to stay at Hotel kyoto okura but would like to try 1 night in a ryokan (complete with kaiseki dinner). So far the ones (Montanago,Kinmata) I've checked out are all very expensive, any lower priced ones but also serve a good dinner? My budget is about US$350-380 per room per night (with dinner for 2 pax included)

I am also doing research on that and they are expensive. The rates at Kyoto Ryokan Yachiyo are in your price range. Check them out and see if it works for you:

Since our price range is very close, I will let you know if I find another ones in the price range you are looking at.

BTW: try to book them from this page: http://japanican.com/special/kyoto_winter2008/hotels.aspx
I found the prices to be much lower here (depending on the time you travel) than the ones at their direct site.

Hi I know this reply is 2 weeks late but I just want to let you know that I had so much trouble with the availability of Kyoto ryokans during mid May that I finally book a western style hotel instead. I don't know your dates- I am travelling between 15th to 19th May to Kyoto and I can't find any available room in ryokans near the city area- cheap or expensive. And I must say I did a massive search. So good luck, very unlikely to hit jackpot

Thanks for the heads-up on lodging! My trip is in November and I am trying to book all I can early since it will be the fall colors season in Kyoto. Now that I know what you are going through, I will get back to research places to stay at and make a decision soon!
Travel Tips for Kyoto
Visit Heian Jingu, one of the...
by Ken_Matsuoka
Visit Heian Jingu, one of the biggest shrines in Japan, on a new year's day, to get the year's lunar calendar symbol animal and omamori, or good luck charm. It is fun to watch beautiful women, some maiko dancers, clad in beautiful kimonos and smell smokes from grilled squids and takoyaki, or octopus round crapes. There are a lot of foreigners coming to appreciate the atmosphere of Japanese piousness, mostly with cameras. Strolling along the riverside of river Kamogawa in Sanjo, accessible by Keihan Railways from central Osaka. A view from the bridge Kamo Ohashi is particularly marvelous. The scenary is full of peace and quietness, despite the heavy traffic congestion in the area centering the bridge. Yes, we find too many cars in Kyoto, that is why I wonder why the city don't bother to debate a law limitting the traffic, at least in sightseeing spots like Kiyomizu, Yasaka
and Kitano. Kyoto has its modern aspects. I am glad it has added a terrific architecture, Kyoto Station (photo).
Kyoto in April

We lived in a traditional japanese hotel called Luo Cui which only offers 8 rooms for maximum 32 guests. Hotel has a small Garden with exquisite landscape which is visible from all rooms. Room service is awesome and dinner is served in our room. Our room is around 15 square meters having the function of living room, dinning room & Bedroom. *-* We slept on the floor with comfortable mattress underneath called Tatami in Japanese. It's said that this kind of hotel is much more expensive than that of modern style in Japan.
Kyoto City Bus
by BorderHopper
The minimum cost for a taxi ride is at least $6 usd so if you have the oppurtunity to use the public bus system in Kyoto I'd highly recommend this option. The bus fare is cheap. I think we averaged about $2 usd per trip & the bus does announce stops in English as well as Japanese. The main public bus terminal in Kyoto is at the Kyoto rail Station.
Obanzai at night, udon day- another great bargain
by j-san about Kouan
Another small obanzai restaurant with two more locations in Kyoto aside from this one. Obanzai food is Kyoto homestyle cooking. Udon are wheat noodles. The ones at this restaurant are thinner than some, and I prefer them. Udon for lunch as well as rice re-fills as often as you like. The best thing is that at this restaurant, every month the 5th, 15th and 25th is a ONE COIN lunchtime set! In this case the coin being the 500Yen coin. A delicious traditional lunch in an old Japanese house for less than 5dollars US!
Ryoan-ji's Karesansui
by naruto
Ryoan-ji is a famous temple in Kyoto because of its rock garden or "karesansui". Karesansui means dry landscape gardens.
Composed mainly of 15 rocks and white sand, it serves as a simple and subtle landscape in which many people has come to admire and to contemplate over.
It is said that the 15 stones are arrange in such a way that no matter which angle you are viewing the garden from , you can only see 14 stones. It is only when you attain spiritual enlightenment through Zen meditation, that you are able to see the 15th stone.
Besides the rock garden, Ryoan-ji has beautiful architecture and a "mirror-shaped" pond on its ground. A path leads around the pond for you to admire the various birds and waterfowls, as well as the sweeping trees along its banks.
Ryoan-ji (Temple of the Peaceful Dragon) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Opening hours are 8am-5pm, and 8am-4:30pm during the winter.
Entrance fees:
500yen for adults and high school students
300yen for junior hight students and primary school kids.
