baby changing facilities in Kyoto/japan

by aversonne

Hi there,

will be travelling to japan (kyushu, osaka, kyoto, tokyo) end of april. Would like to find out if these places are generally baby friendly? ie. baby changing table/room or nursing rooms in most toilets, shopping malls etc? Also, are there bidets/ spray hose in every public toilet cubicle which we can wash our child's backside with? thanks!

Hi

A lot of toilets in Japan are generally quite small and are japanese style, see this site: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2003.html (although western style are increasing).
However big malls often got great baby changing facilities. Department stores and malls have so called 'mother-baby rooms' and these are nice and clean. But don't expect train stations to be the same.. these can sometimes be real filthy.. So in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo you should be ok as long as you head for a Department Store.

Have a great trip.
:)

We made sure we had everything we needed to make baby comfortable with us, (change mat, baby wipes etc), which was lucky, because we rarely found anywhere specifically set up for changing babies (we didn't spend much time in or near department stores). Train stations were mostly really filthy...we usually waited and changed him on the train. Out sightseeing we just found a discreet corner and did what we had to do... Brad was changed under some lovely cherry blossom trees!

Travel Tips for Kyoto

do the following things: go to...

by flowergrl

do the following things: go to Kibune for lunch on one of the restaurant platforms over the stream;
Go to Ohara to Sanzen-in and a walk around the country-side (unfortunately, Jakko-in was burnt by an arsonist recently, so you won't be able to see that);
Go to the Heian Shrine gardens; Walk around Yoshida-yama (leave at least an afternoon for this one!); Do all the other things people tell you in the tourist pamphlets. You'll probably end up needing months to do it all! I would have to say that my fondest memory of Kyoto is of my wedding party under the falling cherry blossoms. We had the bluest of skies that day, were joined by great friends, and drank excellent champagne. What can beat that?

Yoshino is south of Kyoto, located in Nara-ken. It's a famous place of watching cherry blossoms and red leaves. About 2 hours of trains from Kyoto, with a change of train at Kashihara-jingu-mae, you'll arrive the skirt of Yoshino-yama. From where, you can either take the ropeway or the bus to get to the mountain area. If you're lucky enough to go at the right time of the season, you can see 'ocean' of cherry blossoms all over the mountain.

JR Kyoto Station

by Restless-in-kl

At JR Kyoto station, you can find almost everything. Hope this list is helpful.

1. Kyoto Tourist Information
- go to Level 9 of Isetan Departmental Store for information and maps.
- get a Walking Guide map here for lovely walks aound shrines and Philosopher's Walk

2.Train tickets
- make all arrangements for onward journeys as soon as you arrive and book your seats
- this is especially true for non-smoking section of train which is always full

3. Food
- Lots of cafes and restaurants around the station and in Isetan (Level 10)

by j-san about Musashi - Kaiten zushi

This is a very popular rotating sushi restaurant with both locals and tourists. All plates are 120Yen and I suggest ordering freshly whenever possible, as it always tastes better than what's on the conveyor belt. When your are done eating, ask them to give you a "kaikei" (bill) and go and pay at the front. At Musashi, they round DOWN the price to the next whole number, eg. 859 yen will be 850yen etc. Nice! 1) "yaki harasu": ginger and deliciously fatty salmon
2) "onion salmon": salmon with raw onion and mayonnaise
3) "maguro no yuke": pieces of raw tuna marinated in soy sauce and sesame seeds, topped with chopped green onions AND a raw quail egg, all wrapped in toasted seaweed!!)

(not pictured: "negi toro": similar to "maguro no yuke" except the tuna is pureed and there is no raw egg)

Kiyomizu Temple - So Much to See

by pammo

We walked here along a path next to a hillside cemetery that was in a lovely setting. We went back along the road leading up to the gate where free samples abound (snacks, cookies, mochi triangles, tea, pickles, etc.).

It is very scenic here and you can go for a nice walk through the extensive grounds. One area is devoted to shrines and good luck fortunes.

I took lots of pictures. Including some of geishas.
