I would suggest staying somewhere near JR Kyoto Station or in the Gion district. You could stay at The Tour Club, near Kyoto Station. There's some information on my Kyoto page.
Have fun in Japan!

I stayed at the Tour Club before too. Not too bad. They have small clean rooms but a bit out of the way.

I also stayed at the cheaper and bigger Hotel Iroha.

I do have the tip on Iroha in my humble Kyoto page. Check out its discounted rates. Very nicely located. The best and cheapest I can get. Highly recommended.

You will enjoy Kyoto.

Have fun.

Bee :)

Very nice location, for bus, local train and visit most places in Kyoto. The best part is there is discount price and charge for ROOM RATE, for example, if 6 persons, you can stay at Room Type B,D or G , Type B has bathroom in your room, Tyoe D and G need to use public bath room. Discount room rate from 13440 Yen to 6720 Yen. If you stay in discount date, 6720 for 6 persons means 1120 each, not easy to find so great price in Kyoto.

I stayed in this hotel in last Sep.(Sep 2003) with my parents and sister, 4 persons. Good for family trip.

Prices:
less than US$20

Travel Tips for Kyoto

Make your wish

by daryll

Shinto is the way of Japanese religion. It said to be the way of god and it is an invidual matter.

Shinto not necessarily to be practice only by the Japanese but whoever believe in it; spirituality.

Right on Heian Shrine main building there is a tree for omikuji means sacred lottery. Normally shinto practice on this is you shake a box (contained pieces of paper of %omikuji%; until the omikoji come out in a shape of roll paper. Unrolled it to reveal the written sacred lottery. Once revealed you will tie it up on the omikoji tree hoping that the fortune will come true.

Generally its all about wishing good in health, studies or even relationship.

Buy the silver key chain of the Kiyumizadara Templ

by joiwatani about Most stores in Kiyumizadara Temple

There are many stores along the walkway going to the Kiyumizadara Temple. Most of these stores sell key chains but look for this particular key chain because it has the Kiyumizadara Temple etched on it and looks like a 30-D. It is very beautiful.

I am trying to frame it so I can display it in my living room and not use it as a key chain because it is too heavy! Silver Kiyumizadara key chain 2500 yen

Try the Kyoto specialty foods

by dogears about Obanzai Natural Foods Restaurant

Traditional tatami matt restaurant (sit on the floor) with lite food - noodles, dumplings and good sake. A Japanese friend is best to decypher the menu (no pictures to point at). The owner took great pride in descrbing the open courtyard garden she made that changes with the seasons. Pick anything on the menu

Watch the Geisha Paparrazzi

by Blatherwick

Best seen around 6 pm in the Gion district. It gets pretty funny at that time as the Geisha/Maiko bolt for their appointments with a trail of tourists snapping pictures behind them. Those gals can really book it in sandals!

Kawai Kanjiro's house -...

by shenandoah

Kawai Kanjiro's house - potter, artist
Kawai Kanjiro was a potter and sculptor in the early 20th century, heavily influenced by folk art and other cultures. His house is traditional but eclectic and you can see his kiln. The 900 yen (?) fee is worth it. Self-tour, English brochure; you can take your time.
