Kyoto accommodations

by swiftfoot

I will be in Kyoto at the end of March 2010 with my wife and 2 kids - aged 18 and 5. I have heard that hotels will not allow 4 occupants to a room so we will have to get 2 rooms. I have come across a VT post which said that a hotel imposed a 60% surcharge for having more than 1 occupant in the room.

Any suggestions on how we can limit total accommodations expense to USD 175-185 per night?

Many thanks in advance for your kind advice.

Look at Ryokans - traditional Japanese hotels. We travelled all over Japan four years ago (all four of us for three weeks) and we always had the same room; We did this for the week we were in Kyoto too. The girls were 18 and 11 at the time.

You sleep on bedrolls on tatami mats, which are made up when not in use. Images of some of the rooms we were in are on my homepage:

I think we used this (or a similar website to book:

GrumpyDiver gave you a good suggestion. I agree with him. Ryokan can give you a whole different experience for you and your family. You are going to Japan in one of the most beautiful times, cherry blossom season. I hope you'll enjoy the old city of Kyoto. May I suggest to take a day trip to Nara while you are there?

Thank you Grumpy Diver, obaachan and Fugu for your helpful suggestions!

Although Ryokan is a totally unique experience if you decide to stay in a businessman hotel (budget hotel), I would suggest to have a look at the hotel we stayed during our visit to Kyoto. Please check my Kyoto page to get the details.

Travel Tips for Kyoto

free internet access in Kyoto

by beornot2be

i found a nice place where you can use free internet, for an hour at a time..its "Campus Plaza" near the Kyoto station.
if you exit the station on the north side, turn left and you will end up on a small street going between the station complex and a big building on your right, follow the street and when the street turns left, just around the corner of the building on the right side there is a entrance, on the ground floor you have 13 PCs connected to internet.
sign your name at the small information desk and if there is no PC available just wait for you turn.
Closed every Monday.

Goyozaka area

by Gili_S

The Goyozaka area and street are not that of the beaten path, it is actually rather known to be a place to stroll around and inspect the architecture and small shops around. It is certainly gaining popularity and business developed to be a crowded place in the coming years. I added here 4 interesting images of this area.

Train Station

by davidlop

Kyoto, as any other big city in Japan, is very well connected by an efficient railway network. When you arrive, you just wonder what will you find outside: the station is a massive building packed with shops, restaurants, and whatever you may need, like a buble of futuristic Japan into this old city... but fortunately, the old traditions are just waiting you after crossing the exit doors. Anyway, the station is a worth visit by itself, to see the way people lives and develops; don't miss the roof view points!

Shiraume (photo of food)

by vic&michael about Shiraume

This course was not very nice and I had to eat it out of politeness. I forced the food down without tasting it and swallowed with beer! haha.
1. Green slimy cold soup with flaky fish..
2. Slimy runny, mucus-textured tofu. (not the usual firm-style).
3. The white blobby thing? Fish intestines and fish eggs...
ewwwww.

Go for a walk in Gion

by yukisanto

People watching, or just soak in the atmosphere of the tradtional houses along your walk to the Kiyomizu temple. As you make your way up the rickety steps, and pop in to the tourist souvenir shops lining the path now and then, look around you and feel the old culture.

About evening time, around 6pm, people start queuing up to see the Kiyomizu temple lighgted up at night. There's a different admission fee charged for you to see the lights. Me? I cn't stand the queue. Too much like those kiasu Singaporean queues..

The Gion street area's a small road leading from the main street somewhere in the middle of Shijo street. There's a horse betting shop along that small street. From there, you can reach the hilly area to Kiyomizu temple after crossing the road.
